What are the advantages of an aftermarket tachometer over the stock one?I'd like to do some runs at the local strip but dont know what to get.Would a shift light,like the Autometer ATM 5340,be enough?

Aftermarket tachs have no advantages,unless they have a shiftlite. Some people think they look "cool"

^ i agree, i mean wats the point of having another tach if ur car already has one Just get a shift light, lets you stay more concetrated without having to look at ur RPMs.

Ummm. I'd say easier to see Like if your left hand is on the wheel and you're shifting with your right hand, then you are kind of blocking the tach. I'd get a shift light instead though.

just get an autometer shift light and the right pills for it... looks better than a huge tach IMO

well if you have cam gears and shaft you will be able to shitf higher and some tacks wont read that high
i've been changing but you'll never see me now now i'm blaming you for everything

it's a pointless mod on the celica.
the stock tac is great. If you need to keep your eyes on the road, learn the sound of the engine.

After that any speedo that can't be calibrated is not very accurate. It could be off by as much as 5 - 10 MPH. This is especially true if you are running aftermarket rims / tires or are using an aftermarket Ring & Pinion set like 3.55, 3.73, 4.10's etc. Even if you get the correct speedo gear for your new ring and pinion set, your stock speedo may still be off, based on your rim or tire combo. This is true for all types of cars. For accurate readings in "race applications" the stock speedometer (and all the other stock gauges) are virtually useless. You'll need to upgrade to VDO (or another brand) of gauges that allow you to calibrate them. For example, you can calibrate a VDO race speedo by simply pressing a button, driving one mile, then pressing it again, the speedo will compensate for rear end gear ratios, speedo gearing, windup, etc. You must also calibrate a speedo often to compensate for many factors to insure accurate readings (in racing). The stock gauges are fine for street applications and general driving, but for road racing / drag applications and to ensure accurate measurements, we recommend you upgrade your stock gauges. Just to note, 99% off all folks out there will be fine with the stock gauges, we are talking about sponsored race applications (or folks that want accurate readings) only.

Also what euroboygt said, some of us are going to try to 10k rpms reliably stock tach in a GTS only goes to 9k. The TRD preped 2zz I saw for sale on some website about 6 months ago where rated for 11.5k...

If you go with an aftermarket tach, put something in place of the stock one. I think having two of the same gauge is horribly rice
