Hey, i was wondering if it is ok to be driving around without the instrument panel in the car. Im going to be painting it and changing the LEDS and i will probably need to drive my car before i get the gauges back in
it could be illegal since if you do get pulled over by cops, they might think you're trying to scam the odometer. If its just for a day or two, go for it. If not, i'd rather be safe than sorry.

other than that you'll be fine--although it will still be illegal you shouldnt have a problem unless your pulled over.
odo fraud is a big offense though--more so than driving without the rest of your instrument panel.
BUT the celicas odo is electric (not analog) so if the ecu for our cars keeps that info then it wouldnt be fraud. i'm not sure how our cars odo's work but i would bet that the ecu keeps track of the mileage--not the digital display itself.
i think all your warning lights will come on (i.e. airbags, engine, etc) at least thats what the guy said at this shop warned me before i changed my leds.

Are you sure that it's stored in the gauge cluster, because it would be really easy for people to committ ODO fraud if that was true.
I know that it's not stored in the ECU because people get those swapped all the time.
Anyways, I have a feeling that this thread might be closed for some certain legal reasons, but I have my cluster out now, and I was wondering the same thing because I need to buy some soldering tools, and I don't feel like puttting my cluster back in, and then taking it out again. I'm lazy.

naww...i say it is in your ECU, for if you were to upgrade to a PFC, you would lose your milage...but it doesn't lose the milage...so your good to go...

You said that it's in the ECU, but then you said that if you replace the ECU, it won't effect the mileage.

I think that the Odometer reading is stored somewhere on the vehicle that is not as obvious as the ECU or the instrument panel.
Dunno though.
Its on the cluster...I have a few laying around for led testing etc.. My real cluster has 9000 miles on it but I have another with like 34000 that I take apart and mess with.
