Hey, i was wondering if it is ok to be driving around without the instrument panel in the car. Im going to be painting it and changing the LEDS and i will probably need to drive my car before i get the gauges back in

it could be illegal since if you do get pulled over by cops, they might think you're trying to scam the odometer. If its just for a day or two, go for it. If not, i'd rather be safe than sorry.

I did it when I was having my LED's changed for about a day. It didn't hurt anything. The only problems was I had no idea how fast I was going.

I'm gonna take your little Civic. Dust it off. Turn it sideways and stick it straight up you candy A*s.

the odo problem is a good point.

other than that you'll be fine--although it will still be illegal you shouldnt have a problem unless your pulled over.

odo fraud is a big offense though--more so than driving without the rest of your instrument panel.

BUT the celicas odo is electric (not analog) so if the ecu for our cars keeps that info then it wouldnt be fraud. i'm not sure how our cars odo's work but i would bet that the ecu keeps track of the mileage--not the digital display itself.

perhaps you'll be ok thumbsup

actually, it's stored in the gauge cluster, not the ecu.

it's fine to drive like that other than legal reasons, and when you plug it back in, you might have a check engine light, so just reset your ecu and you'll be all good.

Are you sure that it's stored in the gauge cluster, because it would be really easy for people to committ ODO fraud if that was true.

I know that it's not stored in the ECU because people get those swapped all the time.

Anyways, I have a feeling that this thread might be closed for some certain legal reasons, but I have my cluster out now, and I was wondering the same thing because I need to buy some soldering tools, and I don't feel like puttting my cluster back in, and then taking it out again. I'm lazy.

If it is disclosed how to alter your odometer it might be closed, but I don't believe that the information is stored in your dash.

naww...i say it is in your ECU, for if you were to upgrade to a PFC, you would lose your milage...but it doesn't lose the milage...so your good to go... thumbsup

You said that it's in the ECU, but then you said that if you replace the ECU, it won't effect the mileage.

I don't get it.

I think that the Odometer reading is stored somewhere on the vehicle that is not as obvious as the ECU or the instrument panel.

Dunno though.

Its on the cluster...I have a few laying around for led testing etc.. My real cluster has 9000 miles on it but I have another with like 34000 that I take apart and mess with.
