My Moda R6 17 inch rims I got were rapped in Yoks with dimensions...205/40/17

While browsing on Tirerack.com, I noticed that they recommend for the Celica that you have 205/45/17, and they don't mention if they have them with a 40% profile.

Browsed for the car that they came off of, and the recommend tire size for 17 inch rims was...205/40/17, the same size tires that are on there now.

Was looking to go slimmer on my next set of tires, and was wondering if I could go as low as 35 or even lower, but I can't find any tires that fit those specifications.

How low on the profile can I go without a severe risk of rim damage?

Remember, they are 17's, and are 205mm wide.

Thanks.

On a side note, Tirerack says that 205mm wide is 7.5 inches, but when I did a conversion, it said that it was a little over 8 inches. Is that because the rim is slimmer than the tire itself? If that's true, could I go with a wider tire, or will that not fit the rim?

not sure about the mm part but I would not go with 30 series tires, stay in 40 series.

Everyone has different opinion about what tire size is best, so don't get to hung up on what tire rack says vs another site.

personally i woudlnt go lower than 40s--especially on 17s because its not needed to go lower.

personally, i'd go with 225/40/17 thumbsup

I can get the tires in 225 width? I've got 205's now, how could it go wider without hanging out of the rim?

with a 7.5" wide WHEEL--your most common options are 205, 215, and 225. ALL of these options fit fine. a little bit wider wheel will actually help traction.

i've heard of some guy even doing 235s on a 7.5" wide (however true i do not know) but in any case i wouldnt recommened it.

you tire would stick over the rim slightly--but it wouldnt affect handling negatively at all. thumbsup

Oh sweet!

I was looking for a wider tire to improve the look of the car (Especially when the wheels are turned or from the back) but I didn't think that you could put a tire on the wheel if it was wider than the wheel.

Good to know. Thanks.

Will I get more sidewall flex with a wider wheel while turning due to the fact that more of it is touching the ground and since it's wider at the top than it is at the bottom where it is connected to the rim?

not sure about the 'sidewall flex' question because it sounds like your going with a 40 sidewall tire...which obviously will 'shrink' your sidewall (compared with the 55s you have now) so flex would also be decreased (when comparing a 225/40 tire to a 205/55 tire.

however, it does make a little sense though that a 225/40 tire would have a little more flex than a 205/40 tire--although i personally don't know the answer, sorry. it certainly seems like that would be the case though.

On tirerack they, go to the specs of the tire. There it will have the rim width range, of what the tire can fit! There is also a measured rim width that they use to give you the measured section width of the tire. So if the rim range is anywhere from say 7.5"-9" and the measured rim width is 8" going with a narrower wheel on the same tire will make the tire slightly narrower as well, the same can be said if you go wider, the tire will also be wider.
What I try to do when I am looking for new tires, i currently have three sets of wheels/tires, is look at the overall diameter. The stock overall diameter of 205/50/16 is apporx 24". A 235/45/17 is 24.2 ( if i remember corretly) however it does require at the very least a 8" wide wheel. A tire with a smaller overall diameter will make your acceleration slightly quicker but with less top speed, and a larger overall diameter will be the opposite. One side note... tirerack is a good place to start but the sizes they say aren't always the best!!

Go with 225/45/17. Personally, I think 40 series is too thin. But, don't go below 40, you wheels would look like a donut.

i have 225/35/19, and i have no problems at all, even when i do hit something, you'll just feel it more cause theres less tire, but never any rim damage and i've hit quite some bumps

That's the load index and speed rating of the tire.

Tire Rack Info [tirerack.com]

Check their tech section and read up about other things also. That's what I did before I bought my rims. The site is very informative.
