I am going from a 1997 automatic Honda Prelude, to a new car. Looking to spend roughly $12K on my new car. Going to go with a 5-speed this time around. Trying to decide on one of the following four:
'02 Senta Spec-V = 2750 lbs., 175 HP, 180 lbs. torque '00 Celica GTS = 2500 lbs., 180 HP, 133 lbs. torque '03 Tiburon GT = 3050 lbs., 170 HP, 181 lbs. torque '00 Eclipse GT = 3050 lbs., 200 HP, 205 lbs. torque
Any reason that I should choose a Celica over the rest?

The Celica is certainly the best handling of those cars. It's also the best in quality, and should be the quickest. The only car that is even close in speed is the Sentra... which is just a plain old sedan. The Celi is just the best rounded of the group. If I had to offer my second choice though, I'd say the Eclipse.

By the way... if you are considering the Sentra, you might also want to look at the Mazdaspeed Protege. It's a 170 HP Turbo, but also has amazing handling and comes with many extras... including Racing Hart wheels and full Kenwood stereo and sub setup.

Yes, celica for many reasons. Toyota Quality, celica looks, celica handling, celica power (though it isnt the fastest car in the world, its faster than what you mentioned.

Celcia GTS hands down, and not just because I'm a celica fan. 1.) My Celcia GT could take on a Tiburon GT and well, that's just sad. 2.)The Eclipse has 200 hp, the GTS has 180 (163 +/- whp) and the GTS can still take the Exclipse, on the street and own it in show. 3.) Sentra, SELF EXPLANATORY. (Compared to these cars anyway) 4.) Celica's looks. 5.) Celica's reliability factor. 6.) Celica's weight (2525lbs.), sound, interior etc. etc. etc.

Okay guys, lots of great responses, appreciate it. Somethings I am noticing, first of all is that it's a 6-speed, that's absolutely awesome. That really makes me want it even more. I can only afford a used '00 GTS though, and I am not even sure about that. In terms of looks alone its a tough call between the Celica and the '03 Tiburons. Even though it is Hyundai they really stepped up with in the looks department with the new Tibs. Okay, with a Celica though, how are the noises inside the cabin? Shocks? Squeaks? Suspension noises (with aftermarket suspension)? What kind of 1/4 mile times are we talking with bolt-ons? Thanks guys.

As for noises, there are some noises but none that will drive you nuts. 1/4 mile wise, if you can land lift on each shift, I wouldnt doubt around 14.9 or so stock. Thats if you do not have a '02. That year has the rev limiter, that makes it impossible to land lift easy.

I agree that the Tiburon's especiall modded Tiburons, can really look insane. I know its still a Hyundai and kind of screams cheap, though.
Okay I am a bit confused, what is this land lift everyone is talking about? Sorry, new to Celicas.
What can you do for a GTS to help out with torque? I am coming from a Prelude that lacked in torque as well (156 lbs.).

Tiburon is way over priced for the quality you get. Should be $15,999 FULLY loaded GT V6 6speed (WHY is that an option? ghey) Celica is the best in that group, fastest, best handling, best looking. Also most expensive

Lift is a celica gts exclusive. When the celica hits a certain rpm (around 6000 or so). The cams switch to a more aggressive set, creating more power (40 more horses) by letting your engine breath deeper.

LOL.
Does anyone have any links to some nicely clean modded silver Celica's? And also what is a better bet, a silver (color I am not crazy about) GTS or a black (color I love) GT?

Also, how much worse is the GT vs. the GTS. Because I just received word that I can get approved for a black 2003 GT.

I am trying HARD for a GTS. Called a few more places. I am coming from a Prelude, so I want to feel like I am driving a car just as fast or faster. A GT really isn't even an option. I mean what is the stock 1/4 mile time for a GT? 16.0 or something? I had an automatic Prelude though. I think going from an automatic to a 6-speed is a great idea. I am about 99% sure on a Celica.

A 5 speed GT should be faster than a prelude AUTOMATIC,plus if you ever want to Turbo, people prefer that GT pver the GTS.

If you're thinking about an Eclipse and don't mind driving a used car, why don't you look for a GSX or GST? They are way faster than the new eclipses.

I am almost 100% sure that I am going to be getting a brand new '03 black Celica GT. So stay tuned. Somethings that I am going to doing immediately.
- debadging the "Toyota" and "GT" from the rear, leaving just the Toyota emblem - black tint - clearing out the orange in the headlights, black housing the headlights
Obvious things in the future:
- slam that b*tch - some kind of kit, not too aggressive - HID's - 18's, most likely ADR GTSports - swap in some leather seats
Etc. etc.

There is absolutely no competition between the Celica and all those other car.
The Celica GTS is very light and extremely agile, in terms of Performance in 0-62mph and quarter mile, the Celica beats all those other cars out pretty badly. Not to mention the GTS has a pretty "hi-tech" engine (VVTL-I, 2zz-ge, also used in the new Lotus Elise) for what it is, it is actually better than the over-glorified VTEC and is more like (or better some would think) than the I-VTEC.
Those other cars are just nothing to the GTS.. but I guess it depends on what you like, what your use for the car is and you should test drive them all, but when it comes to real Performance then the Celica GTS is by far superior.
Edit: if that doesn't prove it, then take a look at the user Lucky on this board and with the few mods he has, he can run mid 13's (now imagine what he could potentially run with some more common mods and then he could even have a better set-up then that) and this...
"In order to get some track time, we opted to join in on a P.O.C. (Porsche owners club) track day at Willow Springs "Streets of Willow". John Hotchkis has raced Porsche 962's for years so he feels right at home on the track. At first we got some strange looks and giggles from the Porsche owners, until we proved what the car would do on the track. What our GTS is lacking in HP, it made up for in cornering ability. This just proves that a properly set up Celica, can even overtake faster, more exotic vehicles, and earn a respectable reputation on the track."
Plus, it has been very well known for the GTS to take out EVO's on the track too.. stock for stock I believe. Pretty fucking impressive.

I pretty much changed my mind. I was completely set on a brand new '03 black Celica GT.
Now I am rethinking and I think I would be better off with an '00-'01 GTS. I just hope that I can find one in black, etc.

So I am better off with a used GTS?

The thing about getting a older GTS is some say the '02 models have a lower rev limiter so you can't shift at or past redline. Also, in later '02 they changed the shift gates (I personally think the new shift gate is much better, but some disagree.) Also, some '02 GTS had a fuel tank "problem" where when filling up, the gas could sometimes overflow because the tank wouldn't click..but it's still a free replace and install by Toyota. And the one other thing about these seven gens. is they are known to have their belt tensioners loosen up, it's not big deal though and it seems to be mostly a thing to do with cold weather, but some people get it replaced only to have it return, but you can just grease it up and it will be fine again too.. so absolute no worries with that, just an annoying sound is possible.
