Manual Gear Transmission Oil Change Instructions
August 15, 2001 - CelicaGarage

[Linked Image]

You will need the following items

2.3 liters of 75w90 GL4 or GL5 gear oil (GT uses only 1.9 liters)
Suggest using Redline 75w95NS oil. (don't use Redline 75w90) without the NS
Full Synthetic is the best!

10mm, 17mm, 24mm socket wrench

1. You will need to take the driver's side plastic engine cover off.

2. You will need to remove the fill and drain plugs as shown below. Make sure not to lose the metal gasket with the bolts.

3. After it's drained, use a funnel and tube like this. Open the hood and drop the tubing down into the engine compartment and into the fill hole. Plug up the drain hole.

4. Fill with the proper amount of oil. You have the right amount when the oil starts to leak out the fill hole. should be about 2.3 liter for a GTS and 1.9 liters for a GT. Plug up the fill hole and replace the plastic cover on the bottom of the car. You are done.

My car feels so much smoother now when shifting. It's like a got a new car now.

I just changed the oil in my transmission today, and the picture was helpful, but I discovered that the GT is laid out a little differently. (I'm assuming the picture above is from a GTS.)

The GT has the fill plug to the left of those wires, and it's 24mm, just like the drain plug.

Don't use Redline 75w90ns. Use Redline MT90. It's for our transmissions which have synchros. MT90 has an ingredient or something for synchros which is crucial.

Remember, Redline MT90.

Also make sure you have a large oil catch pan to catch that stuff. I only caught 1/3 of the oil and the rest got on my garage floor.

I used Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Oil (75W-90) and after the trans service the gears shifted so much smoother. Definitely make changing your trans fluid a must!!!

Ok my question is where does the fluid go? I've looked all over my engine bay to look for where the transmission fluid goes in but i can't find it if anyone has a pix of this i really appreciate it if you can post it. I have a 2000 GTS if it makes any difference thanks.

Just a Tip when draining the oil. Loosen the fill plug about half-way but do not removed it. Then removed the drain plug. This is to prevent it from splashing all over the floor. Remove the fill plug when the oil starts to drain slowly.
I just found this out after spilling it all over the place.
Well. good luck guys.

^^^ Could you circle the "fill plug" and the "drain plug" in your picture. Thanks thumbsup

Find what type of plastic-screws/plastic-plugs you have, and use one of the methods mentioned below:

If you cannot unscrew with a hex socket...

you can
1) insert a flat-head screw driver in to one of the slots (only if the plug has these slots. if not, skip this and read the link below)
2) twist the center piece to pop it out
3) pull the whole plastic retainer straight out

or the most common method

The fluid that came out my transmission came out looking like mud. I guess the previous owner never replaced the transmission fluid. I added redline mt90 just now, I hope everything works fine afterwards.

Hi Folks new member here. Changed manual tranny fluid today. 04 Gt with 53000 kilometers. Manual says 2 quarts. She only took about 1 and 3/4 quarts. Assuming some stays in the tranny when draining? Am I correct in thinking that? Used the recommended Redline mt90. Whoa she shits soooo much smoother now. A big thank you from Canada's capital. ( Ottawa)

Hi guys...so there are two different pictures above...one apparently for the GT, and one for the GTS, could someone please clarify which one is for the GT (2001)? It looks like the drain plug is the same for both, but the fill plug is different?

Also, the owners manual says GL-4 or GL-5...some folks say GL-5 is worse in some ways in some transmissions (not necc Toyota trannies)...one of them being "too slippery"...the synchros don't spin up fast enough...I actually had that exact problem when I replaced factory gear oil in a 1994 Miata with GL-5 synthetic, thinking "5" had to be better than "4"...and had to change back)...anyone have that experience?

Thanks...

P.S. I've never dragged up a 16-year-old thread before! smile

The OP photos are from the GT-S.

The second post photos are from a GT.
"GT has the fill plug to the left of those wires"

See attached image for side-by-side comparison.

I dont have any better photos of it for the GT, but as you can see from the following link (another guide for the GT-S), is that when you get yourself under your Celica, it will be quite obvious what you're looking for. Its laid out a bit differently, but the fill holes look similar.
