I need advice on what brand & model to get. With or w/o navigation. Pioneer, Alpine, Clarion, Panasonic, etc. And for those with this unit already, where did you put the "hide-away unit" (brain)? Thanks
The new pioneer rox... m8 of mine just got it few weeks ago.. install was done in a breeze.. and it's so freakin multifunctional now were just figuring out how to get 2 more LCD's on the same unit for in the back
BTW: 'm not getting any of the above since I'm making my In-car computer.. with 2 200 S-ata HD's with movies and mp3's on.. I wrote a fully customized program to work with the car I even can monitor everything going on in the car on my screen
I have the clarion 935vd and i love it... Definitely makes the car more fun to drive, atleast to me. I got the unit installed professionally was like 150, and they put it under my passenger seat.

i put mine in by myself and by the "brain" im assumeing the box with all the rca plugs. and i just stuck mine under my passenger seat ontop of the carpet that way you have easy access when you want to plug something into it like navigation or somethin i dont know. but good luck with it all

Pioneer deck is awesome, but pioneer has some problems with reading DVD-R's, something about their drives. If you have stuff on DVD-R, you should get the alpine.
BTW, try before you buy; this can save you many headaches when it comes to media compatibility and other potential issues with the finished install.
Oh yea, the Alpine is cool too, you can't go wrong with Alpine, the build quality is second to none in my book. Sony also makes nice head units as well, so you may want to look into them as well.
Actually, there are lots of good manufacturers, you just need to compare your system's goals with the features on the various head units out there (That's why most places have the gear hooked up; you can try it hands-on.)
check out some of the "carputar" systems. sick shit...
That's not that sick I'm working on a complete system with Harddisk and everything.. acutally a complete PC system for in my car wich works well.. wrote the software myself and planning the install right bout now I'll post pics as soon as I'm finished (month or 2 )

Yea, thats what I meant. Check out some of their completed projects, they have a bnuch of people with full out PC's in their cars. Take this guy for example http://www.swooby.com/z/navpc/
That's quie like the system I build only mine can be completly opereated trough touch screen.. very easy.. and has some nice special build screensavers for when I don't usre it and equalizers.. when I have it installed I might be able to make set's for everybody install is quite easy actually
Well those are defenately nice awesome.. but well.. pc on your car is no the right explaination it is nothing like a pc anymore it's a fully programmed multimedia system just like Pioneer only with tons of more functions.. like direct downloading traffic information, mp3's and stuff like that.. can reed DVD RW's and even burn it and it's also very well hidden but sure you want a descent brand.. go for Pioneer.. those set's rock if they weren't that expensive I would have saved me the work and got one of those

i just want a simple system but thanks for the idea.
with tvs i always think its best to go custom with built in tft screens...thats my opinion. Alot of people like the clean and easy install of a motorized one..they cost like 1200 for the pimp ones though..so i dunno...cheapest way is get a nice expensive tft screen(200 bux) and a jdm center console..and boom your set. MAkE SURE IS TFT..my screens claimed to be and they arent..so im kicking back with those until i replace then with good ones. but its not bad as long as the angle is right. inside the car you see everything...people outside just see a shining blur of a screen..but overal it all depends on how much $$ you wanna save and how you want your car to look.
