First time posting!
Thanks to all who can offer a suggestion.

My friend recently got a used 2000 GTS (60k miles) from a toyota dealer. Intermittently, when the throttle pedal is pressed, there is no response from the engine at all - just sits at idle. After a few seconds and a few presses of the pedal (which feel normal) the engine will begin to respond normally. It does not seem to matter whether the engine is warmed-up or not.

The dealer replaced the mass air flow sensor, under the "toyota certified" guarantee. The problem persists and now the service dept says they will not perform any further service.

any suggestions?

Thanks
John

Mine use to do the same thing and this is what I did to stop that delayed throttle response:

1) Lucas Fuel Injector cleaner
2) (4) New Denso Iridrium Spark Plugs from www.sparkplugs.com [sparkplugs.com] and anti-seize lubricant for the plug threads
3) Tighten throttle cable
4) Clean the air canal of the mass air flow sensor.
5) Reset ECU.

The spark plug part # for the Denso Iridriums is SK20R11 on www.sparkplugs.com [sparkplugs.com]

Steven,

is the "canal" part of the sensor, or is that just the top of the air cleaner housing? was there obvious deposits/built-up that could have effected the sensor?

Here are some instructions on how to clean your mass air flow sensor: https://celicahobby.com/ubbthreads/thread.f_1862388016_0_collapsed_2__1.html

I'm sure this sensor will be worth taking a look at, but the dealer has already replaced it ... so unless there's a short in the plug/wire, it's probably something else. This thing doesn't just hesitate, it doesn't budge off idle when this occurs.

Is this correct? - If the engine's ecu does not get a signal indicating additional airflow (due to opening of throttle plate), then additional fuel will not be delivered ... right? hmmm, maybe that plug is worth checking.

thank you

it's the MAF sensor.

It's probably dirty, clean it and change the plugs, viola.

Happened to me, I did guides for both spineyes

I'm encouraging my friend to clean it herself, rather than putting up with crap from the dealer. I'll post the results when known.

Thanks to all.

Also, it could be a stick throttle plate, or the throttle body could be obstructed. Spray a little carb cleaner in there, and get in there as far as you can with a rag and wipe it clean.

Also, make sure that all hoses that go to the air box are secured, and make sure that there are no cracks or leaks in them. Your focus should be around the throttle body itself, and the air box. If the MAF sensor was replaced, then perhaps that's not the problem, unless your dealer didn't really replace it.
