if you are talking about 205 as in 205/40R17 the 205 is the width measured in millimeters the 40 determines the hieght of the sidewall, the R is for radial and the 17 is the size rim so the difference between 205, 215, and 235 is the width
hope that helped

so, which is the best width for our cars?
If you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself.

If you're looking at 17s and want a low profile you'd probably be best off with a 215/40/17 tire. The advantages to wider tires is better traction overall. Also, the advantage to thicker (higher second number) tire would be a smoother ride overall.

isn't 235 a little wide? Won't it touch the inside fender? The best size to go with is 215/40/17 for 17's. 18's I don't remember.
