I have an '01 GTS with 40,000 miles. So I'm driving down the road yesterday in 4th gear probably going about 40 mph. All of a sudden, I feel my shifter is kind of loose. Turns out the entire shifter could move around completely free with no restriction! I'm still in gear though and I immediately pulled over. At first I thought somehow my shifter got disconnected from the base. You could literally move the entire shifter around without holding the clutch in and with no restriction. I could push it into 3rd and 4th gear but no other. I drove home but every time I stopped, I had to start from 3rd gear! I'm think my entire transmission might be broken. Fortunately, I have powertrain warranty so they should fix this. Has anyone ever had this problem? Even if the transmission is broken, I don't know why I would be having the problem with the shifter being all flimsy.

Thanks

I highly doubt all your other gears just happen to break, it sounds like your shift linkage is hung up, sometimes the brackets slide out of place where they connect to your tranny
