my bro has teh same radar and everytime I drive with him, it works when cops have their gaydars on...
that's a good detector, don't blame it
Cops can't block their radar signal.
It could have been the angle that he got you at, or it could have been that he didn't even use his gun, but rather "guessed."
They can pace you, or estimate your speed in addition to using their radar gun.
Does it say that he used radar on the ticket? If so, then he lied, or your detector didn't pick it up.
There are things called radar jammers, but they jam cops radars so that when they clock you, it doesn't display a correct speed. Cops can't jam their own radar guns.

Lol, I understand your pain. A few months back, I got a speeding ticket too. 80 in a 55. 6 point ticket. went to a mandatory court appearance and got it dropped to 2 points. The only radar detector that works well is the Valentine One. I think all others are shit.
Enzo Ferrari " You may be a Ferrari owner; but, you may not necessarly be a Ferrari Driver."
Many radars have standby and "instant on" modes where no signals are radiated untill the user aims and then activates the radar. Same with lasers. I speed all the time when in rush hour traffic, everyone else around here does too. Haven't got a ticket in years, although I have had a few close calls. I used to have a cheapo radar detector and the damn thing falsed all the time. The detector made me paranoid as hell. Got rid of it after a couple of months and drove a little slower. Paranoria went away too. I try to let some "bear bait", faster cars get ahead of me on expressway. When I go through small Georgia towns I always obey the speed limit. The cops will let the locals go by and nail the non-locals. Its their town so obey their speed limits or pay the price...I understand the Phaser radar jammer works well, but I think that would just piss off the cops if I as the only one on the road and the cops radar went haywire...
maybe he was following you and thats how he paced your speed.. happens to me all the time
he was in front of me. i couldnt see him because he was behind a bush.
That happened to me the last time I got a ticket. He was on a bike too, it was damn near impossible to see him until it was too late. I hate radar detectors, I had the same one as you do, and I would always see the cops before the thing went off, so I took it back. I also drove right by a cop one time, and he had the gun out clocking people, I SAW HIM DOING IT, and the detector still didnt go off.
Most detectors say they can Detect Laser guns, but thats shit the cop would have to shoot the Lense on your detector wirth a .25" beam to set it off Could have been that
And what your thinking of by The cops turning offthe detection thing, I think you mean VG2. That is so cops can detect you detecting them. therfor VG2Guard (on most detectors) will BLock the cop from detecting you detecting them detecting you
damn bro, your ticket aint shit! before i got my celi, i had a 97 camry, i was doing 97mph in a 55 zone... fucking gay ass CHP caught my ass and i was fucked... the crazy thing is that just before i was on the hwy doing 120 in my camry.. Anyways, going to court and doing traffic school, i payed a total of 290$... My ticket originally was 330$ But i talked to judge down to making it lower. But yeah bro, just next time if you want to speed just be careful of your surroundings and know your area. I only speed when i come home from work late @ night and only in areas im positive about that cops or CHP wont be around. Just gotta be careful. Good luck on the ticket bro. You will get let off easy consider it was your first ticket and you will be able to clear with traffic school! May i add if this helps bro. Go here to do your traffic school! Its easy and simple and hella pimp! http://www.goodbyeticket.com/
If you want to avoid a "ticket" this is what you do: First you plead "guilty" If the ticket is for $166, then you write out a check or money order for $167 or higher. Now i don't know how laws are by you but in CT by law in order for the "transaction" to be complete, they have to send you a refund check. Now this is the good part: If you don't cash that check the transaction never is final. That means nothing gets reported to your insurance company and I don't know about any additional points on you license, but definatley your insurance company never gets notified that means it never happened in the first place.
I never tried b/c i found out about it after i got all my speeding tickets but one of my friends sister dated a cop in CT and he confirmed its true...
Just a little piece of F.Y.I.
Once said by a wise man..."i am too metrosexual for my own good"....you know who you are...
Man that Passport 8500 is the same thing as the Valnetine IMO, dont blame the radar man lots of cops pace you and then at the last minute turn their radars on, cops around my areas always turn their radars off late at night and pace people. My 8500 has saved me planty of times
yeah most cops nowadays have radars with DSP, they are pretty much impossible to avoid. the only sure thing is an active radar jammer, but they are super illegal.
you could probably take it to court and have it lowered a little or changed to something else.

I dont know how it is in your state but in Iowa I know that the clerk of court's office can keep up to $3 or $4 over what your fine is so if it is $166 then you would need to write a check for $171. My mom works in the clerk of court's office and she told me if i ever get a ticked mail in a check for $5 more and dont cash in your refund check. havent got a ticket yet so i cant try it out to see if it works.
My dad used to have an Escort, granted it was an older model but we would regularly watch cops point their guns at us while the detector remained silent. Can't say I like the company, but if it works for some people, great.
My dad now has the Valentine One, and there is no better radar detector out there. We've had the detector go off, saw no one for two minutes and then the cop goes by in the opposite traffic, both of us going 60, do the math (close to four miles, open road).
Like Loflyer said, a lot of cops now use instant-on so you don't know until it's too late, but if you're lucky you'll catch a reflection from someone else and have enough time to slow down.
As for radar jammers, which cause the cop's gun to read blank, they are definitely illegal, and if you get caught with one you can get arrested.
