Wassup guys! This might seem like a stupid question and that I should already know this..but I have an auto GT...will it mess up my trany if i use the lower gears (i mean 2 and L) while im driving or starting off? My friends tell my its gonna mess up my tranny but my co workers say its ok to use them to go fast and shit. Which of them is right here?

It's fine, as long as you dont drive it into redline. It basically just holds it in the first couple of gears, same way the tiptronic shifter does on the GTS.
I'm just a crosshair I'm just a shot away from you

I shift manually all the time & I have 200,000KM on mine & nothing has happened yet. I also downshift all the time as well to use the engine as a brake. I have even been known to rev it in neutral & dump it into drive. It will even take that a couple of dozen times.

My previous car was stick. I wanted an auto. I only shift manually when I am in the mood.

^^just a thought...maybe you have already broken or worn out something w/o you even knowing about it. btw about your statement above, I think it is IGNORANCE if you CHOOSE to think that what your are doing to your tranny is not doing any harm to the car

Damage hapens each time you start your car or drive it. I have 200,000KM on it & it still works ... so what does that tell you? Damage is a relative term. Yes it does damage, but not enough to destroy the tranny obviously.

This does hurt your tranny after a while, but it's a god damn toyota tranny- not a 3000GT; you're really going to have to abuse it.
Frankly, after you drive an auto for a looong time you get a feel as to how it reacts and can force a gear shift- up or down- a lot faster than the auto tranny will change it by moving it from L-2-D... shit, you can even shift faster than half of those civic drivers who dont know how to shift their manuals. lol It still doesn't have the power to the ground effect that a true manual would.. but.. ::shrug::

L1 is 1st gear, L2 is 2nd, D is 3rd & O/D is 4th.
You put it in L1 at the light, when you get close to redline you shift to L2 & so on. Then O/D is the botton on the side of the shifter.
When you let the tranny shift automatic it shifts about 600 before red. If you shift it manually you can go about 400 into the red before the limiter kicks in. So you get en extra 1000 RPM's on each shift.

try controlled gas shifting rather than sport shifting.. I don't know how fast your tiptronics are, but you guys keep bitching about them, so maybe gas shifting would be faster.

the toyota is known to be able to take a beating. its fine to drive in 1 and 2 if it wasnt ok they wouldnt have put it there. also the main reason for the 1 and 2 is for steep hills when going down hill instead of roasting your brakes drop it to a low gear for a more controlled slow down. also its used to emergencys say brakes fail drop it down a gear to help you slow down.
