I just bought a xs Turbo kit yesterday and i was wondering if the kit is bolt on and ready to go or do i have to do some tunning? i know it comes with the power FC and its already tuned but about the other things like the blow off vavle and the waste gate? what other thing do i have to do befor i start my car?

well for one thing a BOF is not needed but recomended. and not just for the pretty pshhhh sound it makes. thumbsup

I would call XS Engineering to be sure, but they'll probably tell you no tuning is required for it to work. Just put it in.

actually it pretty much is needed if it wasn't there you could really mess things up

Does anyone understand what a blow off valve really does? It is used to vent excess boost from bulding up when the throttle plate is closed (when you shift or you're sitting idling) and potentially blowing your Intake pipe up (although it would take a TON of boost buildup to actually make something burst). The idea is that the BOV lets the pressurinzed air out of the "hot" Intake pipe and recirculates it into the "cold" Intake pipe (before the Turbo). This effectively lets all the boostout of the Intake tract and prevents any potential "explosions".

Now, venting your BOV to the atmosphere (that "PSSSSSSSH" sound) is an excellent way to a) attract attention to yourself and b) confuse the shit out of your ECU. When the MAF reads how much airflow is entering the engine, it sends a signal to the ECU, which takes this airflow reading and calculates how much fuel the motor will need to effectively and efficiently use the air. Here's the problem:

If the MAF reads the airflow as "10", and then you blow "2" of that airflow out the BOV and into the engine bay, the ECU will send "10" fuel to match with the "10" air that it thinks it's getting, but in reality there is only "8" air.

Therefore: You have "10" fuel and "8" air, when both quanities should be equal. The condition of more fuel than air is known as "rich".

Now, if you are an attention whore, or you just really like the "psssssshhh" sound, it is possible to atmospherically vent successfully, without any ill effects. This is done by either:

a) Placing the MAF downstream from the BOV, so that the MAF is reading exactly the amount of air that engine will recieve.

OR

b) You can compensate for the air that gets vented through tuning, but this only works with a standalone ECU like the PowerFC or the AEM standalone system.

Here's something else to consider:

At 5psi, your BOV will be quite quiet. The more boost you run, the more air gets blown out of the BOV, and the louder the sound is. You won't even really need a BOV until you're running 10psi, something you'll only be able to do once you have lowered the engine compression and changed all of the stock internals.

Of course, there are also acoustically tuned BOVs that are ridiculously loud and obnoxious. TurboXS makes one, its's called the Type-H RFL (Really Fucking Loud)

I'm reading about the XS Engineering kit for the Celica GTS in the Crazy Boost edition of Sport Compact Car (6/03), AND it says the kit comes with a BOV and that no extra stuff is needed. The horsepower claimed at the wheels by XS is 241 hp (Dynojet). Boost is set to 7 psi within the pretuned PowerFC.

The person asking the question was very specific as to the XS Engineering Turbo kit for the 2000 and on Celica GTS, not just any Turbo kit. The kit was developed to be dropped in and run as is without problems.

the XS kit comes with a A'PEX Twin Chamber BOV, and the Turbo has an internal wastegate on it, all you need to buy in addition is a boost gauge

"need" as in nice to have, not necessity if you don't start playing around with XS's settings. Or if you have a laptop, you can buy the FC Datalogit kit which monitors the boost level in real time.

Or if you don't have a laptop, you can just buy the PowerFC Commander to display data of your choice, much more than just boost from the boost gauge. Ignition timing, knocking level, battery voltage, Intake air temperature, etc. Only $349 from Monkeywrench Racing. Of course as we all know about the PFC, you'll be able to adjust the lift engagement and disengagement, and also the rev limit, with the Commander. I just called MWR yesterday: The current setting the MWR team has decided for lift engagement is 5950, which is supposed to help smooth out the transition to lift. Disengagment is recommended to be 5700 if you don't want to shift at too high rpms with the Turbo going, and you still want to be sure you land in lift. The rev limit is up to you and what you're willing to risk. So the Datalogit kit, or Commander... whatever you decide is a nice investment, especially if you plan on beefing up your engine to run higher boost settings later down the road.

good luck with that kit rofl BTW first thing to know about XS is they arent very truth ful.

1) install the Turbo
2) get it tuned to your car cause no 2 cars are identical.

you an pull more then 241 whp out of it if you dont let xs touch it. you'll want to get the datalogit so you can monitor your knock so you'll be aware of any tuning problems their might be. thumbsup and last, pray their newest gen manifolds dont crack like all the others. lol
