Start off in first with the clutch to get you rolling. You can't match 0 MPH. Some cars like an old K-Car I used to own will allow you to start them in gear, so you put it in first & use the starter to get moving. LOL

When it is time to change gears from first to second; use about 1/4 throttle & apply gentle pressure to the stick to pull it out of gear. When you hit the right RPM it will gently release.

Going into second, the same thing. Gently (DO NOT GRIND) apply pressure toward the second gear position & start your RPM's low and work up until it GENTELY falls into gear.

REPEAT

If you do this every day for years you will be able to go from one gear to another just as fast as someone with a clutch.

rev matching...if you're good at it then all the merrier.

personally, i prefer to use a clutch even though you have to replace them eventually.

and in racing...a clutch is pretty much essential if you drive a manual thumbsup

There are people out there who can match up just as fast as shift with a clutch.

Once you can drive without one, you will learn how to drive with one more effectively. Most people ride their clutches and don't match up worth a crap, bone heads who don't realize everytime they shift to the next gear without coming close to matching kills their clutch a little more.

Its all about knowing your machine and knowing what you are doing.

Yeah, ok Mr-drive-your-freakin-skidoo-across-a-freakin-lake-in-the-summer. grin Just kidding. I do this all the time with the truck at work, but not my car. If you ask nicely I'll tell you how to drive on the highway while reading a newspaper.

Do that in a celica, and I will laugh when you break it.

Cables snap REAL easy.

Amen, this is an advanced topic which if mastered will prolong the life of your clutch. It will also make your racing smoother and therefore faster. If you're not that hardcore about racing or not concerned about being a very good driver, you probably won't care and you're probably not that fast. Perfectionists who demand precision out of their driving and their cars make the best racers.

Thank you QTRMLR_1.

Nothing like getting flamed for sharing information. Too bad you guys are ruining this forum. Now I know why most of you are 17, everyone else has left. Probably half the kids in here are just pretending to own a Celica. This is no way to run a forum; where is the moderator? bs

Because I'm not the one bashing other members like you are.

The information you posted, while STUPID to do in a Celica with it's already under strength shift-cable transmission, is correct, and your asshole behavior towards other members is not welcomed. 17 year old kids?

Give me a break. rolleyes

What you posted IS retarded. Do you have any idea what will happen to the Celica if you do this?

I do. It snaps the cable.

Which, would be retarded. Since you stand behind it, that makes you retarded.

No one is flaming YOU, just your retarded idea.

It does not snap the cable, who told you that crap? It applies no more pressure than shifting with a clutch. The ONLY thing that would ever brake the cable is if you ram the bloody thing into each gear.

If someone has half a brain they can challenge the idea and not just insult the person. It's childish.

Before this gets any uglier. This can actually be very usefull, not so much for daily driving, but in special circumstances, for example, if you need to stop quickly, brakes tend to skid, but being able to slow down with your engine and brake like that will save you distance, of course, you'd need to know what the hell you were doing. As for the member bashing, I'm not getting involved, just pointing out that rev matching is a good skill to know, just not necessarily live by.

Yes, it does snap the cable. I'd tell you to go try it, but you don't drive a manual.

I do, and do you know how I broke my shift linkage?

It got pulled out of gear once when someone pulled on it while I was driving. SNAP. Horizontal linkage snapped in the engine bay.

Someone with half a brain would know they put the clutch into the car for a reason. To change gears with, not to be used as a piece of eye candy.

Okay, I guess I should have used more dipomatic terms.

By not moderating your forum and keeping order, your demographics have changed dramatically. You have either lost or failed to attract the adult crowd to this forum. This works well if you want a forum with a lot of smack talking and very little useful information.

Something else to take into account, different cars trannys can handle different loads, the celica tranny isn't the hardest nosed tranny there is. However, the principle in certain situations is valid.

Yah, that is quite possible. If you don't rev match it takes a LOT of pressure to pull it out of gear. That's what broke it! If you rev match & apply what truckers call two finger pressure, it will come out real easy & same going in.

You may not understand this stuff, but I do. I have owned many manual cars including Toyotas & it worked fine on all of them.

Yanking the stick out of gear hard without matching your RPMS's is like shifting from Park to Drive without inserting the key. The linkage was broken because it was forced.

...couldn't be right on the money any more than that. It doesn't matter how old you are...being intolerant of other's ideas and calling them 'retarded' whether right or wrong is the wrong way to communicate in a forum of open dialogue. You can ask questions and disagree but to simply label something or someone "retarded" is unacceptable. It's all about treating people with respect. Not that it matters, BTW, he also happens to be right.
