I hate Spending money on gas (we all do), and the way gas prices are today.. im really tempted to just press the 89 button instead of the 91. I was just curious on how bad this is for your car, and if anyone on this site actually does this. I doubt im going to do it, but i just wanted to hear your guy's input.

Don't do it to your car.

It's bad on the sensors, injectors, and if you rev it up, it'll knock and ping like crazy.

dude it says on the little gasoline door, Premium Fuel only! Dont be a cheapskate and a fool and put 89 octane in the celica! My dealer told me that your motor will knock and ping like crazy! And it ruins the total life of your engine. Anyways putting 91 octane is a good thing, knowing that your putting premium in your celi is just sexy grin Also from what the dealer told is that our motors require 91 gas is because our GTS engines are high Performance engines. Anyways I would not want my GTS to have cheap gas and have my engine knock! no way! jose!! Stick with 91 octane man! I know its expensive but worth it in the long run of the life of your car thumbsup

...is 89 premium for you from where you from!?!?! wtf

if not, 91 (US/CANADA) is the lowest you can go on GTS...

EDIT: and 11.5:1 is very high already...

crazy

I think 89 is considered a "midgrade" fuel. The real reason its available is for people supposed to be using 87 and finding they're getting some ping. I'd never step down to something below the recommended octane. You could use something with a little higher octane, maybe 93-94, but too high can be dangerous for the engine too.

The octane level is determined by Toyota & it will be in the manual. Nothing higher that what they state is required. DOES NO ONE HAVE A MANUAL?

^^^^ 91 octane is REQUIRED

89 won't work in an engine with such high compression, just like shifting without the clutch won't work in a car with such weak cables.

ok, i dont really understand. for a regular driver, if you put 91 octane instead of putting 87, ur gonna spend around $100 more on gas every year. 100$ aint nothing nowadays, its better to spend 100 extra for gas then repairing few thousands dollar parts on ur car. plus the gts recommends 91, if you put lower one, it will either knock or damage in other way. it will perform normal at 91, but if you put better octane than 91, it will even perform better. so use 91 minimum and stay out of trouble that will come later on if you put 87

The octane required by the engine is NOT a matter of opinion. It is predetermined by the manufacturer.

That's what the manual, fuel door, toyota, Car and Driver, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc says.

Premium fuel is REQUIRED.

If your referring to my previous post, I own a GT. Minimum octane is 87.

All I was saying is that when I put 91 in, I notice a little better Performance (less lag from a start with the a/c on). Obviously, if you own a GTS and you're putting in anything less than 91, you're asking for trouble.

If you weren't referring to my post, ignore this. smile
