I was told if you drive long distances, like freeway, for a long period of time at relatively the same speed, you turn it off on the offramp. Lets the engine cool a bit. Its the auto version of 4th gear...but not quite.
Don't keep it off a long time, your milage goes down drastically. So I would leave it on, even going around town. Save more gas. There are no noticable increases in power or speed with it off. I wouldn't worry about it. Just leave it on at all times.

Don't go over 75mph with it off... its best practice to keep your RPM's in the 2k to 4k range while driving constant high speeds
As per page 87 and 88 of the 2001 Celica owner's manual:
"You can select either third gear (with overdrive OFF) or forth gear (with overdrive ON) by pushing this button"
ie; with OVER DRIVE OFF, your celi maxes out at 3rd gear and will never switch to 4th.

So according to the manual - all you guys who own an Automatic Celica who say you were doing 120mph, your speedo was either off, or you were red-line'n it for several miles

I've got a pic of my speedo at over 120, and I still had a ways to go on the tach. The auto has diff. gear ratio's than the manual, otherwise we'd get the fuel economy of a Mack truck.
(edit) the ratios are here... you can see the final drive ratio for the automatic GTS would allow for quite a bit more speed than 4th gear on either the 5 or 6 speed manual transmissions (for which you posted the max speeds per gear)

I also use it "braking with the engine" turn it off... and if you need to stop ... push the top button and 2... (stronger engine braking)... then L (maximun engine braking)... ( I never use L ) source: Owner's Manueal pg. 83
the book is wrong b/c i have had my car to 121 mph. That's all it would go, i watched the needle hit 121 and i felt the car just kinda not go anymore. And i also have an auto GT.
by definition overdrive is any gear that has a gear ratio of lower than 1:1 (like 0.75:1) so it allows you to travel at higher speeds at lower rpms and since you're at a low rpm you save gas

^^what were you thinking??? driving w/ clutch is fun!
I'll prolly do a tranny swap when I swap out the engine at 150,000. Where I live there is so much damn traffic I didn't feel like having to deal with it. I wish I had though.
yeah, i'm from LA, n traffic is a bitch...but i'm so attacted to the stick shift that i'm willing to put up with it...cuz i know one day i'm gonna spend the rest of my life driving an auto..so i'm enjoying it as much as i can rite now.
