I need power. And I have about 13000 to spend. The Celica seems to not have the punch Im looking for, but Im a bit worried about the Eclipse because the newest one I want is a 99. I know this forum will be a bit one sided but some of you seem to really know what your talking about!

if i were going to buy a car right now it would be a late 90's GSX. i have a few friends with GSX's and one of them ran 13.2 with barly any money spent. GSX is one of the best cars you can buy to modify

The stock Turbo in the Eclipse is pretty fragile, from what I've heard...not able to handle too much boost. That's not to say anything bad about the car, I LOVE the GSX, but I think with an upgraded Turbo, internals, wastegate, bov, injectors, etc. you'll end up with an extremely quick car, and the AWD sure as hell isn't a bad thing. If it's the car you want, go for it. You can't really find those up here in Canada, otherwise I'd probably be driving a '99 myself

I am a former dsm tuner i know just about every thing there is about these cars, if you are going to get a dsm I recommend getting one from the years 90-92 because these are the years that the engines were made the strongest. Sure they might be old but they have a less engine failure rate that even the newer ones that have a very common problem called crank walk. And for the stock Turbo on a 1st gen dsm which is 90-94 they can be run efficiently at 16psi while the 2nd gen 95-99 can only go about 12psi before the blow off valve starts to leak and the Turbo runs out of air.

DOn't get it!!! i had a 95 gst and it was a nightmare, my roommate karissa had a 98 gs-t and it broke down a good bit w/ repairs ranging from 400-700 each time. my otherfriend had his 96 gsx totaled in an accident on private property by a girl who didn't have insurance... and it is well known thay have a problem w/ blown headgaskets, i had 2 in 6 months, and the transmissions on the stick are not too strong. i'd say go with a wrx over an eclipse!
and they have it right up above, the saying w/ fellow dsm owners(at least the Turboed) is THEY'RE FUN WHEN THEY RUN! (mine ran for about two weeks at a time and would brake down for 2 -4 days and they are not cheap to fix!)

I also heard once modded there not that reliable. But if you just plan on lightly modding it then ur stight. But heavy modding then you might have problems...But i would still get it.

These cars are FUN as hell to drive when they work right and damn fast when modded right, you can be runnin 12sec quarter mile times with spending under $2000 with the right parts. I really want to get back into these cars but for anybody else thats wants to i recommend on having a lot of money and know how to work on these things if you want one because it will cost you a pretty penny to get that engine running perfect.

Oh yeah I forgot the most fragile part of a dsm from any year is the tranny, if you are bad at shifting or like to race a lot then you will become GOOD friends with your transmison specialist very quickly if you know what I mean.

Points to consider:
- Any car more than five years old will have a minimum of a few problems that come up on a regular basis and will require attention (this costs money and is a pain)
- Any MODDED car more than five years old will have many problems come up that require attention (this costs more money)
- You'll be hard pressed to find a 5 five year-old sport compact that hasn't been driven hard or modded in some ways already. This adds to the above mentioned problems. Buying a used Performance car that someone beat on for 50k miles is like buying a family sedan with 75k miles on it.
- I wouldn't trust Mitsubishi any further than I could throw one
- Last thing. dependability + quality > pure speed

ok.
for all it's 'power' the gsx is still only .1 or .2 seconds faster than a celica gts in the 1/4.

that is very true speed4 but if you put $600 into a 7th gen gts you prolly get 15-20 horsepower but as for the dsm world if you invested that money into a bigger Turbo you can get 100plus horespower just from the Turbo, just something to think of.

the GSX is nice, but listen to my deal for a second.
The GSX will never be very reliable, things WILL break more than the Celica. They are very fast. Doesn't take much to get them to about 300 AWHP. They're fun cars, driven many, but I'd concider buying a 1g talon or something, 92 would be the best year.

revmonster, not to be mean or hate but you can get 100plus horespower with spending only $600 its called a big 16g Turbo straight from the mistubishi factory and cost a little under $600 and when pushing about 20psi from this Turbo you will get prolly about an extra 120 horeses then that stock Turbo could push out, and for the celica doesnt a trd exhaust cost about $600 and from what i have read it is supposed to give you about 14 horespower, combined with a cheap Intake that could be around 20 horespower, so you do the math.

Are you REALLY only going to need that $600 Turbo though? I'm assuming you're going to need to install a boost controller and other system management items to not make your car 'splode. Going to a bigger Turbo isn't exactly plug-n-play. As for the exhaust/intake thing... Our cars dyno in the low-mid 160's. Most of the dyno's I've seen with the PFC and all the standard mods are around 180ish. You do the math on that one... Not trying to argue. Just saying, if I put $600 cash in your hands and that is ALL you can spend, you aren't going to get those sort of gains.

if you are looking at a 99 gsx, the same think i looked at, the thing that talked me out of buying it was insurance, it is absolutely ridiculous on 97+ gsx's

yea at the mobil i work at we have had two tsi and one gst in for work. two of them were head gaskets and one was leak in some of the hoses. heard that the headgasket was made too thin and this makes it weak. good luck if you go ahead and get one they seem fun and fast,

Trust me on this you can buy a bigger Turbo and bolt it on without any modifications and get 100horsepower no questions asked if you buy a 16g or bigger Turbo. sure you might want to buy a boost controller so you can run more boost but that still keeps you in the $600 dollar range with out going over. there is abosolutly nothing you have to do to the engine unless you plan on runnin more then 18psi then you might want a better fuel sytem and some ignition and a exaust but thats it and your set to go. and speed4need if you dont belive me about a bigger Turbo for around $600 then click here www.slowboyracing.com/Mitsubishi%20Turbos/SBR-B16G/SBR_B16G.html [ slowboyracing.com]

All you need to know is that eclipses get crankwalk and mitsu and crysler wont do crap about it. Although ive heard of shops that will take the motro from a 1st gen and put it in the second gen. That would be good but too expensive.
