Just for a lark, I did the butterfly mod & threw in my old K&N air filter. I was suprised how loud it got. On the highway in some cases its loud constantly & becomes annoying. Otherwise it sounds pretty cool. thumbsup

GT automatic, stock exhaust, butterfly valve removed & K&N:

It really is!!! thumbsup

I felt a little sum sum extra in accel too when I step on the gas. Maybe 1 hp, but its something. I'm looking to get a K&N filter, but Pep Boys and Autozone don't have the serial # i'm looking for. 33-2041-1. I had to order it and i'm waiting. frown

This no hp gains though, in fact it might have caused a minor amount of bogging at lower rpms. Its a sound only mod.

The K&N is not worth the money. I got mine for free and hours after I installed it, the AIC went. Its a $600 repair to replace it. I never did have it repaired.

The head on the screw should be too big to be sucked in. I don't get it? Just tape the plugged vaccum line outside of the airbox.

The sound of our engines (2ZZ) unbaffled sounds amazing at least to me. Check the install section to see were the AIC valve is. It's a slit at the bottom of the inside of the throttle body and looks like a screw from the bottom outside on the throttle body. I just recently blasted that son of a goat again, just for my own boredom and pleasure.

It gives that extra mystique. A question of knowing of what is, what will be, or what is realy true. Hell, a Celica's headlights are sexy at night. Who can deny that. That reminds me. I need to check on my own status.

Thank you, I like it. smile

I think the GT auto gets a bum rap over all. The auto is slow from a dead stop, but once your moving it holds its own just fine. The torque rating is good. The passing times are respectable & it gets great gas mileage. The automatic always shifts 600 early so you save the motor a bit. Automatic is smooth, no lurching back and forth like in a standard. The thick tires on a GT give a nice smooth comfortable ride, you don't feel every crack in the road like with low profiles. The GT looks awesome and its cheap! I didn't buy mine to race, I bought mine for transportation. Overall its a cool car for the money. thumbsup

I just did this tonight. Super easy. I like how it is louder just when I above 3500 rpms so it doesn't get annoying when i'm just driving around town. I don't know if this was just my imagination, but I thought the car drove more smoothly.

I've heard removal of butterfly valve can stall the engine. Maybe is not worth for 1hp gains.

Your AIC is not busted, the magnet that allows it to actuate is stuck from the oil from the K&N filter.

Spray some WD40 into the hole inside the throttle body, and it will loosen it right up (make sure you do this with the engine running, and give it a little gas so it doesn't stall)

I removed the butter assy from my 2002 gt and it is great. I did notice a little difference in responce for the better and it does sound better! There is nothing to worry about. It has been going good for a couple weeks now. I am waiting to see if it hurts the MPG. I get about 650KM on a tank of regular.

It won't noticeably affect your gas mileage, unless you constantly floor it to hear the great sound grin I took a trip from here to California and still got over 40 MPG. On normal street conditions I still get about the same.

EDIT: meant to say I get the same on the street after the mod as I did before.
