I am coming up to 15,000 miles and Toyota recom. some special service checkup.
It doesn't look like anything special besides a tire rotation which I just got.
Should I even bother? It was about $200

I guess if you always get your oil changed on time then you shoudl be ok. Just make sure you get the 30k mile check.

Reason I am asking is I just had some "special checkup" not too long ago, maybe 900? where they rotated tires and did their thing

it has been in my experience that the dealer will just "inspect" your brakes, rack and pinion, tire wear, etc. they charge a totally different fee if they need to fix it. it would be nice to check the car for such things but not necessary. for me, i don't trust the dealer for shit, so i just check stuff myself, change oil myself.

The dealership where i go does a 30 point inspection/checklist of service to perform which actually only turns out to be 28, bastards, and every 15k they pressure you into getting a fuel injector cleaning and transmission flush which they charge 100$ a piece for(the "discounted" price ). Many other small serivce stations will charge 40 for fuel inj cleanse and 55 for AT flush. I hate dealerships.

the 15k mile inspection will just see if the aligment is off tire patterns on how it wears down and check for anything leaking. basically youll get the same service if you go to jiffy lube and have them take a look at the tires and check for leaks. only reason it cost more at the dealer is because there techs charge 60 something bucks per hour.

i need the 60,000 checkup! Where? my garage! Just get the important check-ups if you are still under warranty, so if something breaks, they can't blame it on you. Or just do what I do, and do all the shit yourself.

It's cheaper for me to head to the dealer here.
I went to one of the other shops to have them read my CEL code, and they said they'd have to charge me $37.50 for the half-hour of labor (this doesn't mean fixing it, just reading it).
Went to the Toyota dealer, they did it for free in about 5-10 minutes.

Don't bother with a "check up" because they won't fix anything for that price.
Go into the tech section, and look at the Toyota Service Interval sheets. Check the items yourself, and if you see something damaged, get it fixed.
Do the major ones though, like 30K, 60K, 90K because then you will have some ammo against the dealer if they try to screw you.

I just got my 15k service done this weekend...it was $153 and they changed the oil, rotated and balanced the tires, did an alignment, changed the air fiter, and looked at a bunch of stuff. I could have done all of that myself for cheaper, but I did it for my warrany's sake since the manual says that it's a requirement. I don't think they'd believe that I actually inspected all of those parts myself even if I did. My fiancee has a Passat that should be getting a new engine under a warranty that VW just extended to all Passat owners, but they are giving her a hard time because there is one oil change that she can't find the record of. I'd rather not mess with any of that corporate nit-picking if anything ever goes wrong with my car...
