Someone told me that in order to install a after market stereo I'd have to re-wire a ton of stuff... if so, what would I have to re-wire? He also told me that I can only get a certain type of stereo so that it is compatible with my stock stuff.. true?
What system would you reccommend (inexpensive)?
What speakers/subs would you reccommend?
How much work would it involve doing this myself/with a friend?

If you have a GTS or the premium stereo it might be a bit harder to wire up because you need to bypass the factory amp. If you have a GT there is nothing to it just buy a wiring harness. You plug one end to the wiring harness in your car and the other end you crimp all the wires to the corresponding colored wires on the CD players wiring harness. Really nothing to it, takes about 5 minutes to wire up. I suggest you keep your factory speakers for now because you will notice an improvement with the aftermarket stereo installed. THen you can by and amp and sub. You can see some of my stereo pics in my sig.

How much do you want to spend on it??? I installed headunit & cd/mp3 changer. unplugging the fac.radio, got harness ($10) and mountain kit ($20). Sound is better than stock... Then I added amp. for a 600w subwoofer. It sounds much better now. But I guess eventually I'll get new speakers... You know, one thing at the time...

Alpine & Kenwood are really good imo. I also suggest getting a wma/mp3 cd player.

Double din single din stereos? If you get a basic single din stereo you'll need a new din mounting kit to hold your head unit in place. I use a single din mount kit. I prefer just enough bump in my trunk that won't piss of my neighbors.
EC.com Link to din mounting kit.

You can also check out these: JL, Alpine, Pioneer, Ma Audio, Audiobahn, Kenwood, Kicker, Infiniti, Eclipse, Cerwinvega. Their's a wide variety to list it will mostly depend on your preference.
http://www.crutchfield.com Crutchfield Website You can go here and research some name brands that fit your preference and price so you can compare around. It's also a good site if you want to know some basics about stereo systems.
Here's my setup,
Ma Audio- Head Unit - MA700 7''Monitor/Dvd
Ma Audio- 2000W Class D Mono Amp (1 Channel) for subs
Ma Audio- 800W Stereo Amp (4 Channel) for interior speakers
Ma Audio- 6.5 Front Component Speakers - (Silk Tweets, Crossover)
Ma Audio- 6.5 Rear 3Way Speaker
Ma Audio- (2) 12'' Subs
Ma Audio- (2) Bass Drivers
Ma Audio- 1 Farad Synergy Cap
Ma Audio- Cables, Terminals, Fuseholder, Wires, AV Cables
Bunch of enclosed Fiberglass stuff

i used the stock brackets to hang my after market stero, i couldnt find any single din stero kits that looked "good" so i fabbed out an "enclosure" from plexi glass and it looks good. the stero is a sony xplode headunit, linked up to a 10 changer in the trunk, the install was dumb, cause i didnt figure out how to take the front piece of the dash off till like an hour into trying to go from the side footwell by taking off the glove box, and a whole bunch of crap.
The harness was the easiest part, got mine for 13 bucks, and the color codes were listed right on the packaging... spliced the wires together, and soddered them for less radio fuzz, shrink wrapped each wire with electricle tape. and put it all in, the stero is great!! just wish it had an mini disc slot instead of a cassett deck (worthless!!!)

use a rodeo/passport harness at the factory amp, One it will save time and two, if you reinstall your factory it will be easier. The colors do not match up just use a meter to test the wires and connect them seperatly. Just run the front mids and tweets in series so the current wont overload your deck.

Not much got a steal at Sema during a Vegas show through some contacts. I can not disclose a specific amount right now since I am still under a contract but I wouldn't spend more then $500.00 for speakers/subs. If you just want a complete basic setup in the celi and you love your tunes then consider spending more $$$. Competition is rough nowandays unless you got a good contact that backs you up and you offer them 100% of your marketing to pay off for your sponsor. Anyway I love my setup makes me happy. I've competed at many Tweeter Slapshows in the Southern Cali area over the last years where you win cash prizes so pays off in the end. Good way to start building your portfolio/proposals if you decide on making it a serious hobby.

I think it was $241 at best buy.. forgot the model # though.. and I can get a discount on it cause my friend works there.. hehe.. but it was really nice so I may save up for that. My bf has a bunch of speakers and subs already.. and I think a spare amp.. we'll see if it all works together...
