That flap is pretty flimsy. You'd have to reinforce it before you even got started. Even a couple of 8" subs would sag that...kinda sounds like a free-air setup you're thinking about. I don't think it would give you a good sound though.
That is one of the worst ideas I have ever heard. It will sound terrible and that plastic cover is not sturdy enough. Dont do it. Bad Idea. Its ok to mount mids and highs there but not subs.
NOOOOOOOOOOO SUBS THERE GEEZ!!! the celi has a hrd time with subs in the trunk as it is, never mind on a flap that rattles going over bumps as is... Trust me, your subs will sound cleaner in the trunk and in its specified size box
DJ CURTIZ - taking over the world one record at a time Live life on the edge, otherwise you take up too much space.
The subs themselves don't vibrate that plastic cover is only held in place by a few clips.. The plastic piece will rattle and if you play your system with the trunk up the vibes would probably tear the clips off the hatch...

For all you pro's who hate the idea. It will not sound terrible unless you use the proper speakers. You guys are correct Subs 8'' and above will not work properly. Bass drivers and speakers will work. I don't think this is a stupid idea from experience since I've done it. I have done it and have had it done for 2 years no problems no rattles. Custom work was all done on my own. It is a good idea if you do it properly and know what you're doing. You have to enclose them properly to make them sound well. I am using free air bass drivers in mine they sound great. They are inclosed in a custom box to make them work .
On another note some of you who are trashing the idea so fast are correct I will only agree with one part though. The Celica rear deck lid will rattle and vibrate if you're just going to cut a hole their and put speakers in it. You will need to use some other type of material or re-inforce that plastic piece so it doesn't not vibrate since the the plastic deck lid it will cause flex and a ton of rattle.
Follow the guidelines for the specifications of the speakers/subs to how they perform at what dimensions so you get the quality you need in the sound.

It could easily be done with speakers. But like said above you cant put a big sub in there. I dont see the point with speakers unless you are going for pure SPL. In my car I just have a set of XR components up front tuned in "pro mode" with a pioneer headunit and it has awesome sound quality and still kicks a lil' SPL ass when it has to.
