1 RPM? WOW! I am sure that you mean 1000 RPM. Anyway, my car idles below 1000 all the time. I have a manual car though. I don't know if that makes any difference.

Your car is supposed to idle less than 1000 rpms

The reason engine is idling at 1k in neutral is because it doesn't have any stress on it, thats like "natural idle" vs idling against your brakes

Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated here...
Well... I finally bought my dream car, a '93 Celica GT (I love the body style of this year Celica!)... Well, my dream has kinda turned out to be a nightmare! Before I bought the car, it had been sitting for over a year (no one driving it what-so-ever)... But was running great... So after I bought it, I had a general tune-up done on it (new spark plugs & spark plug wires, oil & filter change, throttle body cleaned out, fuel injector cleaner put in, etc...)
After the tune up, I noticed my car was idling really high (like 1100 RPM), that's when it's in park. When the car is in drive, it idles around 1000 RPM. But not only does it idle high, it also idles erratically (up & down between 1000 and 1100 RPM) it's like the idle pulsates or surges... Anyway, I've had a few different sensors tested (they all checked out fine), had a new thermostat put in... I don't really know what the problem could be... Any suggestions?
(BTW, it's an automatic)

i would suggest getting a cold air intake, i noticed mine was doing the same thing, it would fluxuate(sp) when i was in drive. after i installed the cold air it held a strong 1100 rpm even on hot days. hope that helps, its a good mod anyways might as well do it

(BTW, it's an automatic) Well first of all fuel injector cleaner sucks. I've heard many bad stories of it fouling up injectors worse. So don't use it anymore. Now this could be your problem. But before you get new injectors which are expensive check smaller things. Look around for disconnected vacuum hoses, many times this will give a rough or erratic idle. Also would be a good idea to check out your distributor rotor and cap. Also it may be your o2 sensors. I have a 90 GTS and my car used to have a really bad idle problem. But I had to replace the injector. But my car is still idling a little bit higher than normal. But check the small stuff first, then work your way up.

clean your MAF sensor, that's usually the culprit of rough idle.
Also the idle control valve, inside the throttle body.

It sat for a year, without being driven? PLEASE tell me that you flushed all of the fluids (including the gasoline dust in the tank) before you drove it. You will be if you didn't do that.

A GT should idle around 700RPM in neutral. An automatic will compensate & it should return to roughly the same place in drive.

Thanks for the advice... I'm going to have my boyfriend check the distributor rotor and cap and the o2 sensors (if he hasn't already)... I think this car is driving us both crazy... My bf actually went to a Certified Toyota Tech school, and he doesn't know what to do with this car. So any suggestions/opinions are appreciated!
