Well, my '01 Celica GT engine decided to take a dirt nap tonight. From the sounds of it theres physical brokeness on the insides so it's going to be costing me some $$$.

I've been looking but haven't been able to find a price for simply racing the engine altogether or what a rebuild usually costs.

Also, since I'm already in for a hefty amount, is it possible to drop a GTS engine into it? If so, does anyone have a rough dollar figure on cost?

The way I see it, you have several options: (CDN$)

1) Get a used GT motor. They are about $1500 ( www.car-part.com [car-part.com] ), but your going to need to get one shipped from another province because there are currently none in Ontario. It would be an easy in & out & cost you about 11 hours shop labour plus incidentals.

2) Get a used GTS motor. Its gonna cost ya about $2500 ( www.car-part.com [car-part.com] ), plus whatever the dealer wants for the wiring harness, computer, motor mount & you have to make sure you get everything attached to the motor. (They like to strip the motor). It will take an experienced shop some time to convert the wiring harness.

3) Rebuild to original specs. Rebuilding is very expensive. The parts alone for a stock rebuild is about $3,000 with gaskets & tax plus machining time & labour. I'd say about $5,000 out the door.

4) Rebuild the 2L option which is going to be considerably more than the above. Say about $8,000.

5) Report your car stolen and call the insurance company.

Do you have a 5 speeed or an auto?

sorry to hear that bro...i just blew my engine a few weeks ago as well thumbsdown

toyota wants $6,000 (US)...which isn't gonna happen.

an independent mechanic wants a little over $4,000

but if i buy used i'ts going to be about $2,000 installed...most likely going to go this route.

and those prices are for gts engines (i have one)

It's a 5 Speed manual.
Not sure what caused, I started it up and it started ticking. I've been having heat shield rattle so I didn't pay too much attention at first.
I didn't want to drive it but was out with the wife who thought otherwise. I checked the oil and it was down two full quarts. We walked to a gas station, bought some and topped it up.

Started it back up again and the sounds started getting worse and then the thing just stalled out and seized once the RPMs dropped.

For a little car, it's heavy to push btw (especially uphill) - I don't reccomend it.

It's a 5speed btw.

Yep, that's called oil starvation. The damage was already done when you went for oil. Many people including myself have lost motors to this.

Good luck. thumbsup

i was told this as well . iwas told i dented my oil pan all up by draggin. damn me in lowering my celi. no clue though. have a mechanic to check your block to see what kinda damage you done. prolly just bent a rod . hope you didn't actually break the rod. check out monkeywrenchracing.com check out the crower rods. monkeywrench also will do the work but they arne't cheap. if you go to swap gts in there let me know how that turns out cuase i'd like to do it myself. i was temped too but i know you gotta change over tranny or the rpm and gear ratio would be screwed up. then there's the gauge cluster. which you could find one @ a junk yark. not sure what all else you would have to change other than ecu. and tranny. i guess the axles would work. i'd like to find me a whole front clip. keep us updated.

um shouldn't that be taken care of under warranty given that the whole oil thing has been mentioned before. Didn't the girl that had the same probelm with the oil get a new engine because of a defect or something... hmmmm I would take it to a dealer if it still has the power train warranty and see if they can do anything for you. I have a 2000 and I am still under 60k and 5 years... your under in years I just don't knowabout your mileage since you havent said anything about it smile. A new car should never burn any oil and if it does it shouldn't be more the an 8th of a quart. I replace my synthetic every 5k to 6k miles, I do go into lift 1/4 of my time driving and I don't experience any burn off.

110ks so it's just out of warranty.

I found out where all my oil went by the way. Had a flatbed tow truck come to get the car, when he hoisted it up, all the oil that I'd put into it came flowing out the bottom, apparantly it had been pooling up on the skid plate.

This would explain why some people are losing oil and not noticing btw. There's no reason at all that the skid plate should hold liquid. I'd rather have some oil stains on my driveway than not know that all the oil is leaking out the bottom of my car.

Once I get my baby back I'm going to drill some drainage holes in the plate.

Could be a leak, but that is rare. The oil filter or drain plug, or the seal around both were broken/damaged.

If you piston rings are shot, then oil will sneak past the piston and combust within the cylinder. That's more common.

Depending on the condition of your seals and piston rings, your car will burn a little oil or a lot.

No car will retain 100% of it's oil.

That's why it's wise to check your oil level every week or so (depending on how often/much you drive). 5 minutes could save you thousands of dollars.

Kinda like the Geico commercial. tongue

Turns out the oil went right out the bottom of the engine.
Cracked block, no obvious reason for it either.

Most likely from abuse of the engine.

The cracked block is probably a result of the failure, not the cause.

My 2001 manual is losing oil right now, like a mofo. My father in law is a mechanic, and has been one for 45 years, and can't figure out why. About once every 2 weeks I'm almost completely out. There's no smell, no smoke, no noise. I don't know what to do!! I don't want my car to blow I love my Celi smirk
