Celica Forums General Discussion Exterior Air conditioner problem?

Okay, so my A/C has been working like shit! It cuts out/jerks all the time when driving, blows cold air and then doesn't. Had this problem ever since I bought my car used.

Recently I did a basic tune up to my car, changed my tranny fluid, cleaned my mafs, cleaned my air filter, etc. I checked my engine coolant and it was about an inch 1/2 below the "low" line. I bought some Toyota Antifreeze, mixed it 50/50 and added it to my engine coolant container. Filled it to full.

Ever since I filled the engine coolant, my A/C doesn't cut out/jerk anymore when driving. It constantly blows freezing air out now

Does the A/C have anything to do with engine coolant

i'm not too sure, but i believe the engine coolant is to cool the engine and is used for hot air not air con.

i'm no exactley sure what you are trying to say but you say that your air con is blowing out freezing air now... isn't that what it suppose to do..?

No, it has nothing to do with the engine coolant. Could be a loose connection somewhere.

^^^ That's what it's suppose to do yes. My A/C shorts out. It blows cold air and then doesn't, blows cold air and then doesn't. But ever since I added coolant, it doesnt do that anymore, it's really weird!

It's weird I know, but ever since I've added coolant, the problems fixed.

Is it the blower that is cutting out, or the coldness in the air?

If it's the blower, then that is a seperate unit all in itself.

I'd get your AC coolant (whatever it is, don't think it's freon) drained and refilled. Perhaps there is too much air in the system, or maybe your AC compressor is going out?

I don't know what it was, but it's fixed so... Too bad it's only getting colder here in Minnesota

You need to have your system checked for leaks & recharged.

The coolant has nothing to do with the AC.

I now know that the engine coolant has absolutly nothing to do with the A/C, but according to my mechanic, any kind of fluid that is low or needs attention can affect performance or other devices in which you use during driving.

True, if you run really low on antifreeze, your heater in your car won't work worth a damn & you could overheat your motor. It is most important to find out where the fluid is going. Check your oil, antifreeze, tranny fluid, powersteering fluid, brake fluid, and washer fluid weekly. Besides washer fluid, if you are loosing any of those fluids you need to get it checked out.
