Has anyone removed there rear view mirror & how did they take it off & get it back on? I need to remove mine, install some vinyl then reinstall it in same place. Only answer from experience- no guessing, don't want any problems. Any help is greatly appreciated.
If your gonna stick it behind the vinyl wouldn't it sag? I was just thinking of the weight and constant adjustment of the mirror will peel off your vinyl. Why not stick your vinyl outside your windshield?
It won't sag because I have a circle cut out of the vinyl, so it will be reattached to windshield. Vinyl will also be on outside of windshield to cove up hole on inside vinyl.
I don't expect you to understand the concept. I just want to know how to take off rear view mirror & then replace in same place. Thanks for you comments but I haven't had anyone answer my question.
Umm grab ahold of it real tight and (heres where it gets technical) rip that sucker off. Most auto parts places then sell rear view mirror replacement kits that has an adhesive you stick it back on with. Personally i would find another way to mount the vinyl.
i'd be careful with the "yank it hard" method. i had a friend with a jetta vr6 try to remove it and he cracked his windshield.
i would think that using a razor blade to slice it off by wedging it would cleanly remove the rear view mirror. i believe stores sell rear view mirror adhesives, like double backed sticky things...
I'm looking to replace my mirror with aftermarket chrome, and it looks to me like there's a tiny hex nut holding the mirror on. If you look under the mirror attachment at the windshield, there's a sqaure opening, and I think an allen wrench in there should release the mirror from the windshield base. I don't have a lot of allen wrenches, so I'll advise back when I get mine done...
Just left the local Toyo dealer. The service guys did NOT know how to remove, actually brought the official Celi service manual out. They showed me the page on "how to remove the rearview mirror"...it was a friggin' picture of the mirror witrh an arrow pointing downward. The caption said "remove the mirror". Un-befucking-lievable. They passed on the name of their glass specialist, so I will try tthem this afternoon.

Glass tech was contacted, advises you need to slide a jewelers flathead screwdriver into the sqaure opening on the base. Once in all the way, he said there's a tab that needs a slight prying to release a locking clip inside the base. Once released, the mirror will slide down, leaving the roundish base attached to the mirror. If I don't have the right tool at home, I will hook up with the glass shop when they're in this area and let them do it. It should take all of 30 seconds.

Well - I got tons of smallish screwdrivers, and I couldn't release the goddam thing! I'm noit sure whoich way to pry the internal tab, and the mirror guy said you don't want to bend it in there, else it won't go back on once it's off if something fucks up with the replacement mirror. I'll call the company tomorrow and try to hook up with their mobile unit in the next town over...
