New City Ordinance In Place To Discourgage Speed Contests
Oct 13, 2004 3:43 pm US/Pacific LOS ANGELES (CBS) The first car seized under a Los Angeles ordinance meant to discourage speed contests on public streets was destroyed Wednesday, and authorities vowed that more would follow.
"This is a critical issue for the city of Los Angeles," said Los Angeles police Chief William Bratton.
You know, this is just going to cause more Highspeed chases! People will do ANYTHING to get away now becasue they don't want to get there car crushed. There are going to be even more deaths as a result of these chases.
What if your just driving down the street...in your car. Some asslick comes flyin around from outta nowhere...your both just passin a cop that pulled up to an intersection or somethin...he hits his lights...you get introuble for having a nice car in the wrong spot/wrong time...or...you get pulled over for driving 'fast'...your considered 'racing' by a cop who wants to be a dick, next thing you know your out a liscence and your car is destroyed.
I think its going WAY too far destroying a vehicle...to prove a point. Shits been around forever...its going to stay around. Once shit hits the fan...it just goes more underground... Its already been started...and is going to lead to more deaths in the end trying to 'solve it' with this threat.
Make it easier for kids to get their kicks...open tracks up more. Let them blow up their cars hittin a wall and not oncoming traffic. Theres many other ways to go bout it than that...
people spend so much money on modding cars that itll juss be a waste to juss straight out crush the car... at least fine em hard so the drivers get the point... los angeles is gettin a lil too bitchy
yeah , im sure that'll discourage street racing , what a joke.. and "2 fast 2 Furious" has a sequel? who knew? This article was written by someone fed facts by a police department that has much more serious problems to deal with than street racing. "So much for the war on drugs , we can't win that one , lets go after street racers ! yea!" I bet street racing increases in retaliation.
That second wing is like something outta Cheech and Chong for chrissakes! I guess a 3rd wing is outta the question, or would they need a composite photo? What kinda trunk shock holds that bad boy up anyway? I implore the group - WTF??

When I first saw and heard about the crushing I wasn't shocked to hear an illegal street racers car got crushed. Sounded like any other normal impounding until the media blew it out of proportion. I think if you street race then you deserve loosing your car. Out of all the cars in the world why did they have to use the Celica as an Icon for street racing that's pretty lame
Hey you have a Celica "Street Racer".
Originate, Innovate, Never Imitate. Since 2000-04.
Street racing is BS anyway... I know a lot of ppl who do it and I always tell them not to.. a lot of ppl go to newark for that shit... i slap em in the head and say 'wtf is wrong with you! take it to the track!'
its not just a one time thing. in order for your car to be crushed it needs to be a nusance i just got back from paying court fines and dealing with the judge for loud exhaust and other things that would remain nameless. basically if you get caught once whoopy big fine a over nighter and impound fees get caught again and steeper fines. get caught about 3-4 more times for the same stupid things your car is considred a nusance and will be destroyed staright from the judges mouth. so basically i have about 2-3 more chances before my car becomes a nuscanse
street racers deserve to have their car crushed, but as law said, there are always some that will be mistaken for racing and they'll lose their car for no reason.
yes, street racing could be mistaken and your car destroyed, much like capital punishment on an innocent person. A good lawyer however could prevent that from happening.
Speeding amongst a group of cars could be mistaken for street racing (like with a car club). You might just have a fast car that accelerates well, but you're not even going close to WOT, and the cops will crush your car to send a message. There are obviously some cases where there is room for interpretation, especially where the cops don't know the full potential of a fast car (which would be racing it). I think if they have gone this far already, they may even crush for exhibition of speed. Sure there is a need to balance personal freedoms with the Greater Good, but crushing almost sounds like the beginnings of a police state. Anyone agree?
It's one thing to fine someone the value of their car, but it's another thing to crush that car. Many people have emotional attachments to their car. So I guess the reasoning is people won't risk getting their car hurt by the po po. However, there could some real sh*t going down if cops continue to do this to owners of nice cars. I wouldn't be surprised if cops started to get gunned down for this.

I wouldn't gun down a cop, 'less he shot at me first, then bullets would be flyin Of course, I don't plan on being shot at, nor do I have a gun, so. *shrug*
Anyway, I'm sure people will be running more often. I sure as hell would if I knew they were gonna smash my car. If I had to weave through traffic and endanger other folks... well, we'd have to see
Point being, I'm sure there are PLENTY of people out there who would value their car over someone else's life, and would subsequently do whatever they had to to get away.
people run because we are all inherently selfish although we often care for our friends (but some may say that is selfish too). From a selfish standpoint, the reason to run would be if the punishment for stopping is great enough where it is worth taking the risk of running and dying (or killing others and getting prosecuted for that). Examples would be if you're a convicted felon facing the death penalty or if you've got 2 strikes against you and you don't want to be buttraped in prison where the state doesn't give a damn about your safety.
Street racing would go on a criminal record, so getting caught could ruin your life as to future employment. But I'm thinking most people who would think of that would count that as a deterrent to street race and not race. However, like I've said before getting convicted of something you didn't do like street racing (which could ruin career opportunities), could drive people over the edge to do things they wouldn't even think of doing.
Perhaps if I'm an almost dead 85 yrs old and bitter and don't care about anyone or anything I might do some crazy stuff like street race and run from the pigs. And pull out my rocket launcher if they corner me (I can use it on the helicopter too!). It's fun when you got nothing left to live for hahahaha. But wait isn't that something to live for?: the fun that you can have when you have nothing left to live for???
I doubt it, but who knows, I might be the street racin' Grandpa.
I just hated it when people start takink all that bullsh##t. This is becase of the movies...2 fast 2 furious and bla bla bla...street racing was invented with the cars...all that nonsense bullsh*t
"..Joining Hahn for the demonstration were City Council members Dennis Zine, a former police officer, and Wendy Greuel, whose district has been the site of several street races in recent years, particularly after the movie "2 Fast 2 Furious" and its sequel.!
My god they didn't make another of those god-awful movies?!! lol Anyone who is inspired to street race by that film should have their car taken away and be given a tricycle anyway!
Like you guys already said, if someone has spent a small fortune customizing their car, and it looks like the cops are wrongly going to take it and crush it, you can bet your ass that more and more people are going to think "What the hell, may as well try and get away from the bastards" Trouble is, it will only fuel the fire more when there are import "Street Racers" appearing on "America's Scariest Car Chases" or whatever that crap is...
isaac, did those pigs ask to use copyrighted material
we should sue their ass
nope - but I'm not worried about it...
It's not that they choose a 140 HP GT Automatic Celica from Florida ( https://celicahobby.com/gal3/FC200306V )for the graphic of their California article... is the fact that they put smoke under the rear wheels of a FWD vehicle
whatever - i still find that entire article quite amusing
It's not just your imagination... Your day really does go by twice as fast while on EverythingCelica.com
wow...california is serious...time to teach people to behave I guess...in GA we don't really have a tremendous amount of street racing like in california and florida...we just all drive fast as hell on the interstate...its like the damn autobahn for a lot of people here...I have cruise control set at around 80 mph IN THE SLOW LANE...and I get passed by all sorts of people...there are only a couple of spots that are heavily patroled that people actually meet up and talk about racing
i hate the USA they do some stupid shit, like going to war in iraq for wat, no fucking reason, they want to crush our cars for wat, fuckin nothing y dont they just consentrate on drug dealers no us
That Camaro looked like a POS in any event! And that's no way to crush a goddam car...they should have gotten a hydraulic crusher and done it realllll slowwww, making the ricer watch from up close! BOOOYAHHHH!!
Life is the sexually transmitted interruption of an otherwise peaceful existence...
the cops just want you guys to run so they can get more footage for Most Scariest Police Chases, then they can make more money on that show.
Because it's easier to take out street racing the stupid politicians just want to show that they are doing something to make our streets "safer" as they are too lazy to take on real serious crimes like drug trafficing and illegal immigration and murder cases. Just by reference to 2F2F and it's sequel?(Must be a limited press release viewing), you can tell that the media doesn't know what they are talking about, street racing has been popularized since the muscle car era, but now that it's mainly an import thing with young people and the old muscle car guys are to old to race they just want to take out their frustrations on us.
