I remember the fall of 99 when I first gazed upon the 7th gen celica. I was unimpressed at magazine pictures|but seeing it in person I fell in love. When a celi rolled up my eyes were fixed on it completely. And you noticed that everyone around you was looking at it as well. Murmurs from the crowd of thats my next car wow that car looks sweet were not uncommon. They were scarce in numbers and when you saw one it was always a pleasure. The car was revolutionary. It was Toyotas answer to Acuras Integra. The torquey GT model at a flyweight of 2400lbs. was affordable and the high strung VVTL-I found in the upscale model GTS was made to combat the GSR. Toyotas way of saying Hey Honda|get ready for a teabag and suck it!. Even the introduction of the ITR didnt seem to slow the celica revolution. It only provoked a sport-M celica edition with even stiffer suspension, lighter weight, and more power. The media praised the celica. It broke 2 out of 3 sport compact car handling and braking records. It was the king of its class. Late 2002 I was the proud owner of a celica. Its aggressive looks was a head turner and taking the corners was never more fun. I was in love. But things change| It seemed the celicas reign would end as abruptly as it began. AWD turboed rally cars were being presented to the public, a $26,000 285hp RWD car was available, the rotary engine was making news, and Acuras answer for the celica, the RSX, is still growing strong. Sales have dropped. Toyota put the official nail in the coffin this year with its announcement of the death of the celica. The car that stood head and shoulders (according to SCC anyway) above the GSR, Civic SI, VW 1.8T, Mitsubishi eclipse, was now looking up at the cars of tomorrow. And maybe that was its downfall. So specifically designed was the celica to trounce and beat the cars of its class at the year of its induction that its designers failed to make a car that would compete with the future. everyones feelings toward the car began to wane, including mine. Despite the usual celica fan boys|the celica had lost its luster. Words such as underpowered too pricey rice boy car were not uncommon. And it seemed everyone including their grandmother was driving an action package celica GTS. My feelings seemed dead when I sat in a new 350Z. it was the celicas distant big brother|at a modest base price and performance that boasted close to 290hp and a ski pad rating that will match a modded celica. Quite frankly when I stepped out from that V-6 powered RWD car|I had one thought in mind..the celica is a lil bitch. My heart sank..and I drove home no longer a proud owner. Even last week I found myself flipping through classifieds. Driving home on the 405 all I hear are the rattles of my trunk, or the ticking of my engine|it was an annoyance that grew everyday. I look at my car not having been washed in weeks|rock chips on the front bumper and dents on the door panel are the only thing I see. Then yesterday morning I set out to do some errands. I came a cross an intersection. Turn right, I head to the grocery store|turn left, I head toward some canyons. It has been a awhile since I was able to stretch her legs. For a moment she purred|begging me to take her out|just for old times sake. Having such a hectic schedule I never took the time to enjoy the celica. And although I love my fianc, driving fast is a no-no when she is in the car. So I sat there|blue pill, red pill. I smiled.ok girl, one more time I told myself (again talking to yourself merits medial attention. Talking to your car does NOT..or so I was told). I zoomed in the straightaway as my intake and exhaust wailed like an indy car. I knew this canyon run, it was always empty and made you feel like you were the only car on earth( and no Im not telling you where it is because I want to keep it that way). The car hugged the ground as I executed the turns. Not in a dangerous way|just enough to appreciate the way she didnt need for me to brake. This felt like I was in a cockpit again instead of a work commuter or grocery getter. Every time I hit lift my intake would give a sucking sound before a loud scream..wooshBWAAAAAA!!!!|it was awesome. I dont know why Im writing this. Frankly we dont really need another celica butt-kissing thread. Its just that after yesterday|I fell in love again. So much so that after the run I took her to a much deserved car wash|I even waxed and cleaned the engine plastics|something I havent done in a long time. I even took the time to cover up the paint chips that I have been meaning to take care of. Does this mean that Im keeping the celica forever? Not exactly. It just means Im keeping her for a little while longer|.

Actually, I prefer the Celica as it is today, compared with the cars of today. Name one of the sports cars mentioned that gets better gas mileage. And handling? Still topnotch.
