what do you mean by trying to open the door?
if you just mean pulling on the handle while the door is locked...then nothing is wrong. Most aftermarket alarms won't even be set off like that.
I don't have the factory alarm but things that usually set off alarms are:
1. Door/Hood/Trunk opening - if you pull on the handle that won't do anything, if the door actually opens (ie slimjimmed or sth...that should set of your alarm).
2. Shock sensors - if someone smashes your windows...
3. Some extra features...like proximity sensors (usually for convertibles...if anything moves around the car), or tilt sensors...i.e. if someone is trying to raise your car so they can jack ur rims.

Most systems are not that sensitive. I had CarToys install a very nice Python system and mine would not react to someone lifting the door handle either. Typically the car must be jarred from bumping or the 'perimeter must be breeched.'

just thought of this...
sit inside your car and arm the alarm...
then unlock the door by hand...not using any 'unlock' button.
then open the door...should set the alarm off.

Mine is so sensitive that if you lean against my car, it goes off.
The ups truck always sets it off when it drives by.
But I also have a series of warning beeps and then the full alarm, which disables the starter and such.

the stock VIP system is like glass, dent and breakable protection...meaning if everyhing is locked and it only will detect if someone breaks the glass open, hits the car, or such. Opening doors will not trigger the alarm. Stock Toyota security isn't the best there is.
