When down shifting from 5th to 4th in my GTS on the highway, 4th gear grinds even though my clutch is fully engaged. When I took my car in for service @ Toyota I told them about the problem. They said it's nothing for me to worry about at this time. Does anyone else have this problem and what could it be?

I have a brand new 04 and I think the tranny is unfriendly. I have been driving sticks since 3 on the tree and this 6 speed is at best a pain in the ass. angry rice

Even my one friend's rig it's this hard to shift, it feels like your clutch is out. If I can't get the problem fixed, or learn to work with it, I will be getting rid of her cry

It happens once a blue moon it has happened to my GT but the grind was very very very slight. It's common the gears will do that on a manual transmission try rev matching when you down shift at high speeds. Be careful when you downshift fast and hard and don't pop the clutch your more likely to cause more were on your tranny in the long run. Anyway, it shouldn't be happening all the time if it's grinding and not engaging during normal shift changes try flushing you tranny fluid with some new fluid. If it still grinds like a pain in the butt get your synchro's checked frown. thumbsup

my bet is the fluid... change it NOW or you'll be replacing your tranny soon, like i have to do now...

seriously, don't drive it again until you've changed the fluid. If the problem continues, take it to the shop

try shifting to neutral, wait a sec, then shift into 4th. This gives the syncs time to catch up, its better than just jamming down

I have the same problem I can only downshift to 4th gear if I am not going faster then 40, year 2000 sucks it has all the bugs here is the TSB for which it might be the problem

https://celicahobby.com/tech/tsb2/TSB_2001_6spd_GTS_Gear_difficulty.pdf

I just had my injectors and ecu replaced which is another problem I had and there is a TSB for that as well.

sickcelica696 is right. When down shifting from 5th, if shift to neutral, wait a sec, then shift into 4th, it does give the syncs time to catch up, its defenettly better than just jamming it down for now (that sound hurts me more than it hurts thet car). I guess this is what Vin Diesal meant when he said "granny shifting, double clutching", in Fast & the Furious.
