So get this...

A year or so ago I was hearing a strange noise from my engine, so I took my car to the dealership (i believe i posted about it on here too). At the time, my car was still under warranty. They told me that the noise was normal, and that nothing was wrong. It was due for an oil change at the same time, which they would have had to do anyway when they dropped the oil pan. It turns out that NO the noise was very much NOT normal, it was a rod bearing that was getting ready to go. So, last week... the noise gets MUCH worse. I took my car to a different shop to look at it. The verdict came back that i had lost a rod bearing, and the shrapnel from it had toasted all of the other bearings in the bottom of my engine, and damaged the timing chain. I need a new engine.

To top this whole story off, it would seem that at some point in the car's life, it has had its tranny fluid swapped. Given that it's only been to one shop where there was any engine work done (the dealership), I think i can assign blame for this one. They used 90 weight ENGINE oil in my transmission. After a few thousand miles, I noticed the problem when it started shifting rough, so i switched the tranny fluid myself, back to the sychro-mesh fluid it needs... problem solved... NOT! Now it whines in 4th and 5th. I need a new transmission.

Whole story, and I'm sorry, it's long... $4,000.00 repair bill coming my way in about two weeks. grin wtf

dude thats scares me ive been hearing of some wierd noises on my car too, getting louder recently, and i took it to the dealer, they bullshitted and said they couldnt hear it! that dick told me strait in my face "the mechanics were unable to hear the sounds that you described". so i thought i was just trippin a bit, then my cousin hears all the same noises and is like "dude those aren't normal". so im def gonna take it to another shop... bottom line: DEALERS ARE ASSHOLES!!! angry angry angry

You said you had a warranty when they looked at the first time when they took the oil pan off, why didnt they fix it then? If this is the case then they are complety at fault and need to cover all the expenses to replace the engine, am I right guys.

I am still confused to as why they didnt fix the problem when they took the oil pan off, if you had a warranty it should of been taken care off, what happend with this?

^^ because they say its driver's fault..toyota always does that.

and toyota wonders why j.d. power & associates ranked toyota so low in customer service.

i personally can not see myself ever buying another toyota at this time thumbsdown

^^^I dont see how they could physically say its a driver fualt unless they were in the car with him driving, or were with him to say he took the engine apart and caused the damage, this is really making me mad I am starting to hate toyota now thumbsdown

I'm guessing that the damage was caused to the engine when one of the people that I had change the oil left it 2 quarts low... I cought it in a couple of days, but that could have been enough to damage the bearing... and I do drive hard enough that if the bearing is already damaged, no matter how well I maintained it afterward, (never let ANYONE change my oil again... did it myself) it could have been enough to continue damaging that bearing.
