Hello,

So yesterday I went to Kragen to pick up a box of Mobil 1 5w-30 with my girl. As I was getting the box, she asks why am I spending $29.94 for 6 bottles when there are other brand like Pennzoil for half the price. I simply told her that everyone in the forum recommends Mobil 1 or Royal Purple.

Sooo...what is the real reason? Is it worth double the price to put Mobil 1 in my 2000 GTS?

Thanks

Pep Boys (I believe) has a sale buy 3 get 3 free. You have to purchase the calender though (has a coupon in it).

and yes it is worth it...you paid over $10k for your car why not spend a little extra to keep it running right.

well...first of all i hope it is 5w-30 and not 15w-30. secondly, don't buy anything if you don't know what it does. thirdly i hope it's mobil 1 synthetic because that is what everyon the board.

synthetic oil is oppreferred because it produces less viscosity and makes the engine run more economically.

Sorry I meant to type 5w-30. I do know that Mobil 1 is good but I do not know the mechanical reason why. I bought it because everyone on the board uses it, so there might be something right about it. I do not see anyone here praising Pennzoil and etc.

It is synthetic oil BTW.

Actually, the complete opposite. Syntheic maintains its viscosity better than regular oil, so it can maintain its lubricating ability better under extreme conditions. It doesn't leave a many deposits as regular oil, either, so it keeps the inside of the engine cleaner. It can also last a whole lot longer. Someone did a test, an Mobil 1 lasted around 18K with regular filter changes before it started to break down.

yeah just go to Pepboys and ask about the calendar. They don't have it out on the counter cause they told me people just take it w/o paying. So it's 1 dollar and you can buy as much as you want. I bought 3 at once.. It has some stuff but mostly, the useful coupons are the "buy 3 mobil 1 and get 3 free" and since they're 3.99 right now, i believe you can get 6 for about 12 bucks or so. There's also a coupon for "Free Eagle Wax (Spray on" and another one for "Free RainX carwash w/ Carnuba Wax" or something. Good deal. grin

All Mobil 1 are synthetic.
Synthetic or not, it has nothing to do with the viscosity.
5w30 synthetic and 5w30 regular oil has the same viscosity.
These are some reason why synthetic oil is better than regular oil

- superior high temperature oxidation resistance
- high film strength,
- very low tendency to form deposits
- stable viscosity base.
- low temperature flow characteristics

I do not believe there is a Wal Mart near here. It's okay, I needed that oil change pronto, but will be passing by to Pepboys to pick up that calendar with the coupon.

O yeah, is there an expiration date on that coupon?

Also, with the Mobil 1 Synthetic oil, can I change it every 5K?

I recently was debating whether or not to go with Mobil 1 or Royal Purple. The Royal Purple is about $30.00 for 5 quarts, but I am happy with it. I used to use regular non-synthetic oil and since I've switched to Royal Purple the car idles is a lot smoother and the engine is smoother. I used to buck some when taking my foot off the gas in first gear at lower rpm's, but most of the bucking has gone away. I don't know if it's the switch to synthetic or the Royal Purple, but all I can say is is that as long as I can afford that stuff I'm changing my oil with Royal Purple.

naw chelica you would want to change it every 3K or so... dont go 5 because thats pushing that oil above its expectations, atleast I would believe so. Just to to be on the safe side and keep the motor healthy and all change it around 3K to 3500 thats about good. I change mines at or around 3k all the time thumbsup

Mobil 1 can last at least 15K with regular filter changes. It's the same kind of synthetic as Royal Purple, Amsoil, and Redline, though they each have their own unique formulations.

According to Mobil's website when doing their tests they changed the oil @ 7,500 miled. So 5k sounds about right to be on the safe side.

Another thig that was impressive was that Oil consumption over the entire test(1,000,000 miles) was just 0.040 quarts/1,000 miles the equivalent of just one quart every 25,000 miles

Nice. When you sell your car, you will get more cash because of that.

How much does Toyota charge for an oil change anyways? And how long does it take?

toyota won't put in synthetic unless you ask them to. Seafoam removes all of the deposits and shit from the inside of your engine left behind by the oil and whatnot. It acts as a detergent. Much like synthetic oil

the bottle of seafoam should list the recommended number of miles to use it.

I plan on getting me some seafoam for the gas tank and oil tank thumbsup

I'd never run a synthetic for 15k, that's asking for trouble. Sure it can last that long, but oil gets dirty and going 15k is dangerous. 5-8K tops is what I recommend.

I too have free oil changes with my car for a year from Toyota, and there oil is pretty good stuff (any OEM manufacturer oil is).

Regarding Mobil 1, they do have higher quality oils then say Pennzoil. Ever watch those Castrol GTX commercials on how some engines fail early under severe driving conditions using other brands of oil. Well think about your investment in Mobil 1 that way, it will protect better then conventional oils.

In terms of pure synthetic, Pennzoil does have a great one in the Pennzoil /w Penzane (that's the only good oil they got). Mobil 1, Royal Purple and Redline is the top ones. Any other brands you can buy from the stores, usually suck.

so you can change your filter without changing your oil in the celica? never done it myself in this car so far. but on my jetta if you take out the filter it spills half the oil out so you want to drain the oil first then take out the filter. so you don't make as much of a mess when you take off the filter.
