I'm thinking about doing a custom catback. An I talk to a mechanic in my area and he said that I don't need mandril bent pipes. He said the restrictions already in the cat so it's not going to help any if I do get the mandril bent pipes.
What do you guys think?
My mufflers going to be Apexi N1 Universal muffler. Any advice on the mufflers would help too.
Thanks

Well, it's true that most restrictions are in the cat, but it does help if the rest of the pipes are mandril bent... Crush bent pipe are a lot more restrictive! I think he just told you that so it'll save him a lot of extra work as oppose to just crush bent the pipes. If you have the opportunity to choose, mandril bent for sure, it's worth the extra money and work!!!

Well he said that he has to order the mandril pipes or something. And he said it was much more expensive with the mandril piping.
Without the mandril piping was $140 without the muffler. I don't know how much the mandril will cost me though...
I'll have to ask him about that.
What do you guys think?

Some muffler shops could actually do the mandrel bents themselves, shop around and find one that does. It'll cost a lot less than if they have to order it from somewhere else... and again...YOU'LL WANT TO GET MANDREL BENT PIPES!!!

Mandril bent rocks. crush bent pipes lose about 20% of airflow. you're gona need that 20% and mandril bent looks a lot cleaner and nicer. definate

I don't get what you did?

^^^think of a pipe that is bent but has crinkles in it slowing the air path down, now think of a bend that is completely smooth giving you optimal air flow. I am sure somebody can post some pics that will depict the differences.

Just the muffler? I thought they only make catbacks. Anyways what does TPR stand for? And whats a good price point for the muffler only?

$200 is too much for that. I could get the muffler for 200. I don't think the pipes are mandrilled anyways.
TPR's too hard to find. I'm guessing only EasyC sells it to groups.
How's the Apexi N1 universal muffler? anything other than TPR?

Also how big of a piping should I get for the N1 muffler? There's 2: 60mm 90mm 80mm 115mm
What are these in inches?

Mandrel bent pipes use a "Mandrel" inside the pipe during the bending process to keep the pipe from distorting during the bending process. In other words, the ID of the pipes stays the same throughout the bend when using a mandrel.
Normal Muffler shops use a hyd bender to make bends in the pipe. This actually crushes the pipe on itself and you lose on the ID of the pipe through the bend. Not only does the pipe bend onto itself (hurting flow), but it also "wrinkles" which disrupts flow as well.
YOu can have mandrel bent "U-Bends" ordered up and have the muffler shop cut and weld them to whatever you want or you could buy a muffler kit. I personally like Magnaflow and TPR, with TPR being my first choice.

I was thinking about getting Magnaflow but so many people were against it. I don't know why? Do you know? I'm more into the sound than performance. The gains don't really matter for me. Just a decent one would do.

Mandrel bends are better because the pipe retains its full circular shape. Pressure bent pipes will bend the pipe in a way that stretches the pipe on the outside and squeezes the inside together giving a small skrunched pipe that is worst then stock. The mechanic is right that the cat is restrictive but the whole point of an aftermarket exhaust system is to make the system as a whole less restrictive, lazy mechanics and there stupid logic, you might not want that guy working on you car. The mm to inches conversion is roughly 25.4 mm=1 inch.

The last part was funny hehe but I get you

first off there is no such thing as a catback for a celica, the piping does not allow for a catback and even if there was, it wouldn't help any. all the exhausts are axle backs TPR makes a new axle back for the celica..they are not a major company that you can find on a website, they are the best performing so far...better than all exhausts for celica.

I was thinking about custom catback because it was much cheaper. It wasn't because of the performance. I just thought I could save some money if some one could do it in this town... But turns out noone can. So I'm saying that in the end I'll get the axle back. So much for nothing

if you did a custom catback, all you're doing is adding a little more piping to the axle back..which isn't going to make a whole lot of differnce..

Yeah it may not be different with the custom catback in performance but it's much cheaper doing a custom catback than buying a catback system like TRD. But I've decided that i'm getting the magnaflow or a used N1
