it was only 17 dollars so i got it - then he said my serpentine belt was fucked up and it needed replacement a.s.a.p., and said that my engine needed some fluid to 'clean the carbon out'. He quoted me 140 dollars to replace the belt, and 40 dollars for the fluid to run through the engine. I go to the auto shop on the military base and ask em if this guy was bull shitting me. So my belt was cracked a little, but doesn't need replacement right now, and instead of $140, it only cost me $40 including the belt, and labor

Replacing the belt on our cars is easy as hell. all you need to do is take the passenger side wheel off and undo the plastic at the bottom of the wheel well. Then take a 19mm wrench and put it on the fixed Belt Tensioner bolt and push down. The tensioner will loosen the belt and then you can slip the old belt off with ease. Then all you need to do is slip the new one on. The only thing you have to be careful about is the way the belt goes on. I would draw a rudementary diagram of the way the belt runs so you will know which way to put the new belt on. new belt cost. $15-50 bucks depending on the belt you buy.

You're smart enough to cross check a bad mechanic's advice but not smart enough to use quality motor oil?
