When you turn on your car, if you push the button, if will make you faster but only once you get up to higher speeds because obviously overdrive is only when your up to 3rd or 4th gear. The only time to use it would be if your racing because otherwise it is harder on your engine and i think wastes gas.

ask marco (truasiatikpride) or jae...they used to "race"/autox with gts autos.

I mix up what it is called when the button is pushed in your not. Basically, if your racing, push the button once after you turn on your car. If your not racing, dont. Thats whats best.

usually when you start the car, OD is on. so if you start it up then push the button, OD is off.

if you want to do short sprints, turn off the overdrive. in fact, why do you use the tiptronic, or is it 4matic, or is it sport shift???

it is one of the 3 i just figure having control over every gear in the right way would be the fastest but if feeling lazy then no od is the fastest

i thought using the shifter would be the fastest way since gears are all controlled but without that i guess no od is the the fastest

well, if you're doing a 0-60 sprint, the gear 2nd can't upshift to 3rd; hence, it will redline without going to 3rd...

huh? racing? for me, from the line i start of in 1st and hit 7k rpm (a bit before redlining), then shift into 2nd (shifting before redline), then shift into 3rd and once i pass 65mph i turn off the OD. that's how i do it. altough, sometimes i think my auto is faster if i just stay on third and just work with the gas.

also, what's great about the Celica is that even when you are going at 80mph, you are still around the 3k rpm area, which means you can turn off the OD and gain speed faster.

basically its similar (obviously not the same) to driving a 6spd GTS. you want to restrict shifting before hitting lift. you dont want to shift until right before redline. dont just leave it on 3rd, you want to shift from gear to gear. 4th gear is overdrive (dont even bother trying to hit lift in 4th), so you want to shift up to 3rd.

Oh my god... do any of you even know what OD is?!?!?!
OD is just 4th gear. It's called an overdrive gear because the ratio is less than 1.
IF YOU TURN OFF OD, THE ONLY THING IT DOES IS KEEP YOU OUT OF 4TH GEAR!
If you have a tiptronic GTS, the OD button doesn't even matter while you are in tiptronic mode. It only keeps the car from shifting into 4th in full auto mode... which you'll never reach when racing anyway.

In Automatic cars I've noticed using the triptronic shifter is less fast than just flooring it.. the automatic transmision is still doing all the work with the triptronic shifter all your doing is telling it where to switch.. it's good for saving your breaks going down hills or when driving normally and you want alittle extra power. but when you floor it the car knows your trying to go as fast as possible and it'll shift at redline, probably a lot better than you could do yourself. the cars computer is faster and more precises that most people racing they're automatic cars out there.. I wouldn't know personally about the celica automatic/triptronic cause i have a gts 6spd manual.

this is all very enlightening i really did not know od was just 4th gear so thanks for telling me after i get a few more performance upgrades i will take it to the track and see whether just fooring it or using the shift will be quicker

i think if you're trying to go fast in a gts auto, flooring it works better than sportshift mode. in sportshift, even tho you're telling the car when to change gears, it takes about a second from when you push the "up" button until it actually CHANGES gears. if you're trying to get the car to shift at redline, you're gonna have to push the "up" button earlier (like around 6500 rpms). if you're in full auto mode, and you're flooring it (assuming your engine is warm enough) the car will shift right at redline and you don't have to worry about the time delay between pressing the "up" button and the actual shift. btw i have a gts auto and i've learned to love it but i still wish i had a six-speed my last car was an e30 m3 ... i miss shifting ...

yeah man, love your car. dont let some of these guys talk it down. not everyone here has it easy enough to just say "trade it in," or "get the 6spd." just because its not the fastest celica out there doesnt make it any less of a great car.

does anyone actually know how much performance is lost due to the automatic gear box verses the manual?... I didn't know how to drive stick until I was 21.. then a cheap good car that was in stick came up so I learned.(had one friend with a stick prelude who taught me 2 times) I was squeeling outta the parkinglot after I bought the car cause I still wasn't used to it..

why is this ridiculous can i ask? well you can't compare a 5-sp auto to a 4 sp auto. you can't compare a twin turbo V6 engine with a peaky hi revving I4.

what does the engine have to do with the transmission in this aspect ? power is power how you use it is your choice if the supra does better in auto after the upgrades than why cant a celica OMG... think about it...you have 4 gears. the optimum powerband is all the way up at 6200-7800. the gts is fast because the 6-speed is able (with a compitent driver) to land in it's sweet spot (lift) when he shifts. plus it's lift goes from 6200-8300. an auto even on "M" mode can't do that. once in switches gears the needle drops down to 5.5K rpm...waaay below it's optimum power. the supra auto is usually faster than manual autos because first it's a 5-speed and when it shifts it's consistent and it lands right at the optimum power band of the car. not to mention the damn thing almost has 3 times as much tq stock than a gts. another thing...a TT supra can widthstand a horrid amount of boost. the gts with it's high compression by comparision cannot.

The sportshift IS better for racing than true auto mode. The highest true auto mode will shift at is around 7200 RPM. You can actually hit redline with the sportshift mode. Most people talking about this don't even own one.

Shifting in M-mode is faster. The only time regular auto is faster is if you are in fourth gear and put the pedal down. In regular auto the car will drop down to second faster then when M-mode, for some reason it seems to drop two gears faster. When however in M-mode you can bounce the off the rev-limiter. There is no way to get that high into the powerband when using the regular auto, and we all know that is where all the power is at.

yup ... there's a time delay between the moment you push the button and the moment that it actually switches gears ... just like i mentioned in my post 5 days ago.
