Celica Forums General Discussion Engine and Performance Overheating?

My car has been over heating a lot recently...

like.when i turn on my engine, everything is fine...

then as i drive..my engine meter just keeps going up and up..and it blinks on H...

i turn on my heater...and...all that comes out...is cold air from the outside.

this only happens sometimes, but it gets on my nerves cause i gotta pull over and restart my engine and hope my heater works...

so weird...anyone know what's going on?
i'd like to drive normal again...

my 2000 GTS with over 85,000miles...<~could that be the problem???

Might be the thermostat. Not letting coolant circulate. The water going into the engine block is not circulating through your radiator. If it does not circulate , it will not reach your heater core. Thats why you are not geting warm heat when you turn on your heater. Thermostat!

when was the last time you checked your coolant? check to see if its topped off.

Check Coolant first. Check for leaks any where. I am guessing a thermostat is stuck closed. You will need a new one if this is the problem. Also going to need some new coolant.

if you have cooiling problems you should upgrade get the koya radiator it cools 30% more than stock-get all fluids changed out-maybe a transmission and oil cooler system-and if you wanna go extreme maybe get a front mount intercooler even though you have no turbo it will still cool the engine-and a cai if you dont have one already that should keep your engine real cool and maybe give some extra ponies

im pretty sure its the thermostat, if you cant afford a new one right now you can always just take out the bad one and run like that until you get a new one. The only drawback is the car will take forever to warm up but will stay at a constant temp. I ran like this for 2 months, waiting for my trd thermostat/

1. Koyo doesn't make a Celica radiator.
2. The only fluid that needs to be changed is the coolant.
3. His transmission fluid and oil aren't getting too hot, and never will without serious abuse.
4. Intercooler on an NA car. Hmmmmm...
5. A CAI has no engine cooling properties.

yea...filled my coolant...with this red stuff..it was on empty..hehe

but yea...this guy said my transmission fluid is dirty as hell..so i'm gonna have to get that changed soon too...

you mixed the coolant right? 50/50?

am i suppose to? i didn't do it..i got some guy to do it for me

Thermastat is behind the alternator down beside the intake manafold. There is a coolant hose that goes to the thermo. housing two nuts hold it on! Put it in a pan of water with a thermometer slowely raise the temp until it opens, record the temp. it should open between 176-183 degrees F or 80 - 84 degrees C. valve should open 10MM Throw the pan away, because it is now contaminated with coolant! Nut torque is 7 Ft Lbs

Hi all I am having this problem with my gen7, But I have changed the thermostat old for new and still seem to be having the same problem!
Constantly having to top up on coolant so the engine must be using water somewhere?
There are no leaks anywhere.
Should I buy a new expansion tank? Water pump?
Or do you think it might be head gasket?
