Well ideally, you push it to almost red-line in each gear. That way when you shift up to next gear, it remains in lift. Its called "landing lift." That's when a GTS performs like its supposed to ...

Skipping gears? Can we do that and not hurt any part of the car?

Ok this is probablly a dumb question. I hear everyone talking about lift but what is it. Does it only happen with a GTS?

Also about skipping gears. I don't think it hurts it as long as the RPM is high enough for the gear to handle it. I do it all the time.

To experience lift for the first time in a manual car you just down shift 2 gears or so depending on how fast you are going then hit the gas. You will feel the power of lift right after 6000RPM. When you feel this get ready to shift and shift fast then hit it again. This is how to make the GTS fly. thumbsup

GT - Better low end torque.

Hmmm, I am going to try this gear skipping thing tomorrow. I usually shift thru ALL of the gears, lol. Freaking leg work.

god I hope you don't shit through the gears. That'd just be nasty. grin

What if I soup up the engine can I then? Is sounds cool. I wanna experience it. Maybe i should just trade my GT in for a GTS.

ill still say shift where the rpm will drop to the max hp, in a gts thats at 7600 rpm so your best bet is redline, and gt thats 6400 thats 300 before redline, so i nour highstrung engines your prettymuch just gonna wanna top it off, cars with more broad powerbands might be different...but what the fuck do i know thumbsup

whats good about skipping gears... say you pull on ato a street, speed limits 40. you run up second (in a gt) to 40 mph and you normally would cruise in 4th at that speed, skipping gears would be saying screw third ill just go right to 4th, that saves me the energy of shifting 2 times and i use the clutch less and get to be happy doing half the work thumbsup theres my take on it

Skipping gears when upshifting shoudn't hurt a thing.
Won't hurt when downshifting either, but MAKE SURE the gear you go to is within it's speed/RPM range (ie, don't shift to 2nd when you're going 90 MPH, or you'll screw your engine).

Lift is a joyous feeling, and you'll feel it most notably in 1st and 2nd gears (that's my experience anyway, it actually tosses my back in the seat with those gears smile )

And yeah, lift is only for a GTS.
If you're really racing (in the GTS), then shift right before fuel cutoff (a bit past 8,000 RPM) to get the maximum performance (and maximum strain on the engine).

Not sure on the lift bolts, I believe the '03-'05 models come with the better bolts, but they can still break (or wear out).

I've had my GTS ('04) for over 12,000 miles, hitting lift quite often, and I haven't had any lift bolt trouble (but I think they're easy to change, as long as they're not broken, so it's good to replace them now and again!)

it's the 2002 that has the lowered rev limiter. all other years the GTS has about 8450 RPM limiter

noone knows why they put the limiter at 7800rpm, but this is my theory. they didnt want too many ppl come to the dealership with blown engines and trannies and messed up shift linkages, so they blocked the limiter to 7800rpm. then they realized a celica is meant to be reved cz you only get power after 6000rpm and its short to go til 7800rpm, then they switched it back. the knock sensor on the 2002 celica is also different from the other years.
i guess thats one reason they dont want any more celicas or sports cars anymore, cz its ending up costing them more.

ur lift bolts will wear out eventually even if you dont go on lift often, they were redesigned on 2002- celicas.
