well i burned my clutch as i was going 100 on the freeway for 2 hours..i had several problems before..so now since i will change it regardless i will o with a better clkutch.. i have a gts manual...will a stage 1 or 2 be good..what do you guys recomend and how much should i pay???im in new york

Where did you see / hear that? I've seen Centerforce Dual Friction clutches holding 400+ horsepower with no problems. My only complaint about the DF's is that they weren't SFI approved last time I checked.

To answer the question though:

The Centerforce I Clutch feels a lot like a stock clutch, but is has 30% more holding capacity than stock.

The Centerforce Dual Friction will not have a stock pedal feel, may be slightly more "jumpy" and has 90% more holding capacity than stock.

ACT Clutches are my prefered brand though. They are SFI approved an come in a variety of pressure plate & disc combinations to suite almost any driving style.

I used to have a Center force on my mustang and it didnt hold as well as I had hoped, and it sure as hell wasnt anywhere near a stock clutch either. It was very hard to feather esp in traffic. Though this was on a car with 341 whp so the celi may be different, if they even make it for it. But from my exp. I wouldnt buy one again

Well shit. I was set on the RPS clutch, but if c2gas recommends the ACT and Clos says TRD, I don't know what the hell to get now.
Time to do more research.

A nice clutch if you don,t want to put too much stress on the transmission!

You want to get a clutch that matches the horsepower you currently have.

Most guys are N/A and not running F/I, so a stage 1 or 2 would be all you want. If you are N/A you want the clutch to slip a little so you can land in lift into 2nd, if you have a GTS that is. A super stiff race clutch that hardly slips will make it impossible to land lift into 2nd without slipping the clutch or having the wheels spin a little. You can calculate the rpm landing points here shifting at 8300 rpm of course:

You'll calculate that with a clean shift and no slippage you'll land at 5400 rpm.

Of course having a PowerFC and raising the rev limit to 8600 will help, along with lowering the lift DISengagement point to 5700 rpm.

If you have F/I and have a GTS or GT, you'll need a stiff clutch so it will last and not slip during a race. For the GTS, it won't matter so much landing in lift in 2nd because of the F/I power.

buring your clutch out going 100 for 2 hours doesnt make any sense. When the clutch and all motor components are connected (during driving) there is no friction unless your clutch was already really worn down and almost to shit. The only time a clutch burns down is when everything is in the process of engaging. (ie when your letting the clutch out and shifting) you must have really had a bum clutch

i have ACT street clutch..it's alright i guess..i need a SS to make it a lil more stiff..right now it's a lil to loose/too much play..while u're at it get a lightweigh flywheel to..highly recommended, get two things done at one time..i didn't have enuf money for a flywheel so i just had the clutch replace itstead..learn it from me, do both at the same time, save you time and money..

Could you post that thing that would help you calculate the right clutch for anyone. I think that this would be a great tool to have. Please post it!!

well the thing was my boy was double clutching many times and he worn out the clkutch..so as i went to a trip i was doing abomut 100 and i felt the clutch slipping to the point that when i stopped i couldnt go any further... so over all what clutch can i get...how much would the flywheel and clutch be?? and what stage for a stock celica?

some mid-range clutches like stage 3 don't have much more of a stiff feel over stock yet provide much more clamping force. Like the Clutchmasters stage 3 I had, which gripped like super glue but felt almost like stock in terms of how hard it was to press down on it. Do you mean "free play" when you say "play" or do you just mean too soft?

From what I've heard TRD Japan is probably ideal. But an RPS Stage 1 or Clutchmasters stage 1 would probably suit you fine. Just don't expect the latter two to hold under nitrous.
Flywheel will cost about $400 maybe $350. There are plenty of online places where you can get a feel for Celica drivetrain product prices like http://www.hopupracing.com or http://www.monkeywrenchracing.com .

personally, i'm going with spec for my clutch unless i find a better deal on something else...

i've heard mixed reveiews about ACT and RPS and i know a bunch of guys are running boosted on SPEC clutches... so i figure they will hold up for me wink

A moderate like stage 3 for moderate boost. when you boost up to 400whp (and an undoubted huge amount of torque over stock) you're going to need to get stage 4 or 5. I would go with Clutchmasters as they have a reputation for race clutches.
I'm not so sure if the TRD Japan was designed or is capable of holding an insanely boosted Celica.

well...I would guess it's a clutch listed on his website. And since the MR-S makes almost 310 lb-ft of torque, there's only one on that page that can hold that much according to the listed specs: the RPS Max 6-puck.
