Celica Forums General Discussion General Is my import really imported?

As some of you may already know. This issue is growing I think. Toyota is opening more plants in America so they can build the vehicles here instead of IMPORTING them from Japan.

For some reason I don't like the idea of this. The last models that Americans build ( I forgot the model name that they mention ) for Toyota was unsucessful. Customer complained about a lot of problems on the vehicles that were made in American car plants.

The word is that the workers here just plain out don't know how to build car as the Japaneses does. Some also say American just don't have the same passion as the Japanese does in building quality cars.

I want my car to be made from Japan then imported from Japan next time I buy a import car. I want import to stay import.

Actually, a big portion of both Toyotas and Hondas are assembled in the U.S.. I don't think Celicas are though. As far as I know, it hasn't actually affected quality very much though. All the important components come from Japan, as far as I know, so its really not that big of an issue.

A major factor in the lower quality of so-called "American" cars (Chevy, Ford, etc.) is that most of the components (engines, air conditioners, etc) are made in countries like Mexico and Brazil. If you look at what really fails on American cars the most, its the so-called components (air conditioners, alternators, water pumps, stuff like that). On the Saturn I owned before the Celica, the air conditioner had to be replaced SIX times, and the alternator twice.

Japanese cars, even though largely assembled here in the U.S., are still predominantly Japanese. U.S. cars are in reality mostly made in Mexico, Central, and South America.

most production nowadays is automated, so I don't think quality would be affected that much.

Honda and Nissan have been manufacturing cars in the US since at least 1983, and Toyota since at least 1985. I don't think it's the location of assembly that makes the most difference. It's the design, manufacturing processes, and components that make the difference.

I think only Bentleys are hand made still. Correct me if I'm wrong.

besides that, the stickers on the door-jam of any car will reveal the place of origin.

The Mercedes AMG models are assembled by hand. It wouldn't surprise me if other low-volume, high-$$$ cars are assembled by hand also.

Celicas are 100% made and assembled in Japan. Its the only Toyota model that can say that.

Things that affect quality of products most are design, manufacturing process, and quality control, not quality of labor nor production location.

Do you think that has anything to do with the decision to stop producing it?

well its only discontinued in the states and Canada. They are still selling it overseas for a few years, so yeah I think that has a lot to do with it. They are cutting costs while winding down the model.

AMG is a tuner...so of course they're assembled by hand. But I was saying that a car is COMPLETELY assembled by hand. AMG models start with factory produced Benzes.

the big production cars are built here...but parts from japan

i read in import tuner that the celica is the only vehicle in the toyota lineup that is still made in japan

Only AMG engines are assembled by hand, not the cars, (which are assembled by MB)
If I'm not wrong, NSX is also hand assembled.

well all i know if the first letter of your vin is J, its made in japan (no im not kidding)

Ferrari's are assembled by hand, so is Aston Martin, and Lotus.

^true...my celica and paseo are both 100% from japan, don't have any major problem except tear & wear...

I think its great that Toyota makes cars in America. That means more jobs for American citizens when a lot of our jobs are being sent to China and India.

^^Also, the jobs report with all the lost jobs actually were all lost in the manufacturing sector. If you look at it, outsourcing is not a problem at all. Of all the jobs we've lost, outsourcing counts for less than ten percent. Also, outsourcing is considered a good thing in the long run. It forces people to study harder and get better jobs that won't be replaced. It's only a short term loss.

Yeah, the Celica's final assembally is in Japan. But I thought I read somewhere that theres a plant in California that has something to do with the Celica. Maybe its tested there or something. Does anybody know?

look at ur vin and if there's a "J" that means it was assembled in japan...i believe the first letter you c represents the place of region it was put together...i believe most celicas if not all have a "J" there...
