Hey guys, I just went into Toyota today to get my tranny checked out. Basically Sometimes I have to fight with first gear to engage when im in stop and go traffic. And all the time when I down shift from 5th or 6th gear going OVER 40MPH it always grinds Anyways, I had one of the Toyota Techs ride with me to see what the problem was and he took a guesstimate. He told me it sounds like a synchro Damnit which I figured it was. Or he said something about a clutch fork Anyways, my car is still under 5year/60 thousand mile factory warranty and Im waiting for these guys to see if they will just re-build the tranny or just swap me out for a new one. But you see the thing is that, if they have to drop the tranny and rebuild it and diagnose it, and they find a part that is not covered I am screwed for the Labor because they had to drop it and find out specifically what the problem is Hell no am I going to pay hella money for a tranny drop. Thats my dilemma with this tranny thing right now. Its either drop it and rebuild and might have to pay??!?! or Its a New Tranny for me and dont pay a single cent of mine So any of you guys come across this or have dealt with this similar experiance?? If so give me some pointers or help me out with some info on what I could say or something Im welcome to opinons as well? Thx!

to my understanding, 1st gear isn't supposed to be selectable unless you are at a DEAD stop. Mines does the same thing when i try to go to first, so i stop. I don't know about the grinding in 5th and 6th, sucks that it happened. The syncro-mesh in the tranny won't let the tranny go into 1st gear at low speed, probably to save itself from some damage or something.

what are they saying right now? Did they actually mention something might not be covered or is that something you are worried about? what part in the drivetrain besides the clutch would not be covered in the Powertrain Warranty? I think you would know if it is your clutch going out. If they try to say racing damaged the transmission, they have to prove that it was racing that is causing the failure. If they can't prove it, legally they have to honor the warranty according to the Magnuson-Moss Act, federal law.

sorry, actually the Magnuson-Moss doesn't concern racing. If concerns aftermarket parts like intakes etc. If the warranty expressly states that racing voids the warranty, they would then have to prove you were racing. For example: In Vegas, Mitsu dealers send people to go take down licenses plate number of Evo's and Eclipses at the track to void their warranties. Yes, Evil. But if they can't prove you were racing, then they can't say racing ruined the transmission. But if they see an intake which is an aftermarket part, they can try to claim the intake caused the tranny failure, but legally they would have to prove it. But if you want to know about the Act: http://www.enjoythedrive.com/content/?id=8128

if its the tranny and caused by normal driving you shouldnt pay any labor at all, i had a dealership story and they wanted to charge me for swapping my aem intake with my stock one to see if that soleved a problem i was having and they determined it was the cause, then the stupid guy tried to charge me for 2 hours of labor without getting permission, i had to talk to him for a half hour about how he told me all the tests were under warranty and that he never got my permission to charge me to swap it and should have mentioned that and i owuld have done it myself and brought it in...long story short, they make enough money, dont let them fuck you over

Well if they rebuilt the tranny or fix it, what could they possibly find that's not covered? All you got is a CAI (according to your info) and that's got nothing to do with your tranny. But either way, if warranty is gonna cover it, the better way to do things is to get a new tranny. Simple and easy.

Those shouldn't give you crap about the CAI because it's not a drivetrain part!

yeah i have to admit though since i got the car, i pretty much beat up the tranny lol because this is my first car as a stick shift 6-speed. So when I get the new tranny put in, i will be more careful and take care of this tranny because its going to be my last one probably forever

congrats on the free tranny if i were u, i would remove the intake and put the stock back in and make ur car look as stock as possible mechanically. they will not give you any headache about free tranny if they see ur intake, but they will get a bad impression when they see that cone. trust me, when they pop the hood, they love to see it as stock as possible. plus if anything happens again to ur car and they have a good impression of u, they will always take care of you without thinkin twice that you had an intake on ur car. when i took my car to show them that my water pump is leaking, the guy even suggested me putting the engine plastic back where it was. did ur car have that grinding problem when you just got the car? grinding from fifth to sixth definetely sucks and is a sign that someone, either you or the previous owner messed one of these gears hardcore. as for 1st gear, you cannot select to 1st if you going over 20mph. even if you are lower than 20mph, the damn shifter always needs a weird push. first gear just doesnt feel the same way the others for me. 1st and 2nd dont feel the same actually. the best way to shift to first when ur going slower than 1st is push the clutch, move the shifter to the left and press up with ur hand but dont force it in. for example when ur rolling slow on 2nd and wanna shift to first, just push the shifter up and leave ur hand on the shifter leaning it upwards to first gear. as ur mph drop, gear will eventually go in smoothly. do that when you get ur new tranny and be sure not to mess it up cz you got lucky this time, but they wont change it again if you have anymore problems. it is also a good idea that when you shift to first, just revmatch. if you ever wanna shift to first for extra pull when you over 20mph, push the clutch, rev match and the gear WILL go in but you have to put a little force to it. i wouldnt recommend you doing this unless you really need it.

i had this problem with my tranni as well, i took it to the dealer first and they told me it was my clutch, i didnt belive them so i said fuck it dont do anything to the car, so i took it back. 3 months later my fuel injector died and started to leack gas got it fix at a different dealer, and got charged 200 for it, and i was mad because all you had to do is put a new fuel injector that cost 10 bucks. so they guy said we had to do a 120 point inspection thats y the bill is 200, so i said ohhhh really so is anything wrong with my car, and he said no, i was like well how about the tranni, and he said wat about it, i said it grinds all the time there must be something wrong so he said fine we can give it a check. so i ended up with a letter from a different dealer saying i need to check the tranni for bad synchros, took it to the original dealer and the manager drove it, then he heard it and said ok sorry about before we can fix it. this so i said fine with me, they gave me a rental and took 1 fucking hole month to get it fix, a hole fucking month. at this point i had INJEN CAI, and DC Sport header. they didnt give me no bs about after market parts fucking up the tranni, so yeah you should be good 2 go just take it to them and make them fix it. if your tranni grinds its because of synchros im sure of it. sorry for the long post

i had the same problem..especially when trying to go into reverse.
i don't know exactly why..but when i installed my b&m shortshifter the grinding went away. but i didn't have a problem when downshifting from 6-5. it was basically when downshifting from 3-2 and when shifting into reverse at a dead stop.

yeah the asshole service guy tried pulling a "tsb" on me and my car. Fuck that, I had to go over his head and handle it my own way. What is it again, 'Toyota something bulletin" from what I remembered.
