I have always liked the old sport roofs on the Supras and have been thinking of trying it on my Celica.
Then I seen the scetch that XerOGT did and loved it. So I had to ask you guys what you think of this idea. Would it look cool? How hard would it be to pull off? Has it been done before?

XerOGT,
I hope you don't mind me using your scetch.

I'm pretty sure you would need extra frame support.

Or atleast that is what I have heard.

I have a 4 point roll bar in it. Maybe that could be used somehow. Not sure.
Maybe a T-Top would be a better idea.

Yeah, maybe that would be better to support the windshield too. I figured the sport roof wouldn't be so hard to do since it would just be two cuts.
I'll have to ask my body shop about that.

I also like the way he drew the side vents. I think that would look pretty good molded into my APR kit as well.
How do you guys think that would look?

if you make the roll bar more than 4 points... basically a full cage, you could do it...

the side vents would be badass. the celica doesn't have a very big roof, which i'm sure is the reason toyota didn't make this model in a convertable. the 350z has very similar lines to the celica, but a bigger roof, so nissan could make a convertable out of it. i just don't think there's enough space after the whole project is done for it to look right, but if you pulled it off i would have nothing but respect for who did the job, and it would probly look sweet anyway especially because nobody's done it.

Thanks SLVCELI.

spaztikid, it's actually too late to modify the roll bar. I just had it chromed and installed already. They are getting ready to build the sound system around that.
Why couldn't I just support the roof with a brace and use another brace under the T-Top to support the windshield? Think the windshield would still be too flimsy?

Thanks Barret18, but they did make a convertable. I think it was just a prototype. Not sure. PM sent about my body kit for sale.

Thanks eddie_725.

One thing about the side vents... I like the size of the ones XerOGT drew, but there is no line in the middle of our door. I could use the line on the bottom half of the door, but that would be too small. Then it would just look like any other side skirt with a vent.
I don't want to just put an MR-2 vent. That's been done too many times.
Maybe I could just make the top of the vent stop about half way across the door, right in the middle. Does that make any sense?

XerOGT,
I hope you don't mind me using your scetch.

I had that idea last year because friend had a Twin Turbo 300zx with T top. I wanted a Targa top (like the pic) so i talked to my dad and a few people. THe problem with those is that because it wasn't done when frame was built, you would need a very, very strong support for the edge of the cut metal and all the pillars because if it isn't strong enough, the whole roof could start bending and twisting which wouldn't be a good thing at all. Also, because of that and the probability of water leakage, not many places would do that. Your welcome thumbsup rofl i looked into it last year lol...good luck if you do try it happywink

Thanks TRDOTC. Those would be the biggest problems, but it has to possible. I wonder if they had to build the windshield frame of the convertable Celica different from ours? If not, then the only difference would be my having a back window, which could be braced by my roll bar. How to do this is over my head, but I want to do it. I think I would be the only 7th gen with a sport roof or T-Top. Plus I need to find a way to max out on body mods for the car shows.

Thanks carlosjbd. So was it a prototype or does somebody sell them?

we already had big thread about the top,it wont work and you would be driving a death trap on wheels. The celicas unibody frame gives it the rigidity and support, modding it ruins it completly.

Thanks sickcelica696, I didn't know this had been talked about already. Sounds like they gave up too quick. Some people think it's possible with a roll bar, which I have. I just don't see how the roof could make that much difference. Especialy if I have extra braces here and there. I'm going to keep checking on this.

Anyway, back to the side vents for a minute. AZZKIKR suggested NXS vents which I think would look very cool. I would just have to think of a good way to blend them in with the APR kit.

The Celica convertible concept was developed in Southern California by Calty Design Research, Inc., Toyota's U.S. styling studio in Newport Beach. Conversion to a convertible required very little design change. A soft-top was installed and the sleek lines that run from the front bonnet adopted in the design of the new rear boot lid. The soft top folds neatly under a hard tonneau cover.

The interior was fashioned to give it a feeling of race car aggressiveness blended with sophisticated style. The center console shares the convertible's unique blue exterior color. The seats are upholstered with leather; the fronts trimmed in grey and vivid blue ultrasuede accented with grey pearlised leather. The back seats consist of solid grey leather with grey perforated seat backs over blue fabric. Pearlised grey leather is also applied to the top and bottom of the steering wheel.

The convertible is powered by a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder DOHC all-aluminium engine that generates 180 horsepower at 7,600 rpm. It utilises variable valve timing and lift, with intelligence control (VVTL-i) to open up a new era of performance from 6,000 rpm to the redline at 7,800 rpm. VVTL-i increases the intake/exhaust lift when the engine speed is high to improve output and fuel efficiency.

Thanks carlosjbd. That is good news. If they say it took very little design change to make the convertable conversion, then this sport roof idea just can't be that hard. I'm going to check into exactly what they had to do to make the convertable.

eric...give up on the targa idea...as for the NSX vents and the apr gt300 kit...check out ecelica member groupbuy4celica ...in his sig is his silver widebody with the nsx vents...it looks nuts...pm me about getting the vents in carbon fiber...most people get them in fiberglass and mold and paint them...you can get them in full carbon fiber with an area around the vent in fiberglass so you can mold it in and have a carbon fiber vent...very custom

Perfect! I love them. Those are definitely going on my car.
The silver Celica you mentioned looks great, but I think that these would look good molded at the bottom of the car like the drawing at the top of this page. What do think?
I have got to ask somebody to chop that for me.

So why don't you think the Targa top won't work? The windshield would be the same as the convertable Celica and the back window/hatch could be braced by my roll bar. What's the problem?

the point that you would chop out is a major, if not THE, key to our chassis rigidity...chop it out, and yes the roof and windhsield will be held up by your cage, but the handling will suck because when we go thru crazy things like auto-x the major flexion and pressure is dispersed on the roof point...you'd have to put some sort of bar in between and even then I don't think it would be very good...go on the supra forums and read about how the majority of the traga supra owners wish they had coupes...simply because the targa looks good and handles like terds...and the coupe handles awesome because the roofing part acts as a chassis flexion point during intense handling situations

as for the placement of the vents...they would look better with the bottom of the vent about 1/4" above the lower body contour line...it has a perfectly shaped sweep that takes the curve of the lower and rear parts of the vent...check out pics of 02kaminariGT's car...he did the vents awesome...if you were going with something lower I would recommend the MR-2 vents or if you really wanted something different you could get porsche GT-2 vents...that would look nuts with the curves of the apr kit...and would be a change from the nsx vents that are on so many cars now...would you like a pic???????

I hate to say this, but I believe you about the roof now. Thanks Steve, you have crushed my dream. Now what the hell am I going to do with my roof to get points. Maybe I'll steal your carbon fiber roof scoop idea. What do think about that huh?
Kidding. I'll think of something.
I like the Porsche vents idea. Porsche is where I got the idea to mount them low in the first place. Might as well go with there vents.

What I was going to do was this...and yes you may steal it because we're friends...I was going to get the carbon fiber roof scoop, have it molded, and painted...but leave about 1" around the opening of the hole unpainted to show the carbon fiber, and right behind that have "C E L I C A" left unpainted and showing in carbon fiber... here is a pic of the scoop...its amazing[Linked Image from 216.55.128.40]

The problem is that the car could be prone to frame and chassis warping. Basically the frame of the celica, though small and light weight would need an extra chassis support in the middle to "keep the car together" after a while. You would lose a lot of stability. Making a convertible is not as simple as just taking the roof off.

Thanks Steve, that IS a damn good looking roof scoop and your idea will look great, but I'm not going to steal it from you. People would just think I was trying to make mine like Pete's car if I put a roof scoop. Pete's is the light blue APR Celica with the NX bottle in place of the passenger seat.
So if you do a roof scoop, where would you run the air to?

Thanks FloydianSlip6, but Steve just convinced me not to do it. I'll think of something else.

Guys, you just mean a targa roof, and a targa roof is not possible on the current celica because the frame doesn't support it. The frame isn't firm enough to hold it together. It IS possible but it will certainly take away all your safety. The only way it might be possible if I geuss is if you fit a rollbar in it. It's no comparison with the convertable celica since there might be a very good reason why they didn't release one.. and if they'd release one they sure would have worked on the frame..
in short Targa = NO go ! or you gotta have deep pockets

damn didn't read AZZKIKR's post on seccond page, I didn't even see a seccond page wink

IF I were you eric, and I was going to have a massive stereo in the back I would just route the air to the trunk to cool off the stereo equipment...or just get it molded as a show piece for a wilder look...on rally cars the air is flowed directly to the cockpit...as for the side scoops...what if you did the nsx scoops or porsche scoops above the line midway up the car liek I suggested earlier, and mr-2 vents below eek eek eek...that would be crazy

Thanks Steve, but my amps don't even get warm. That's one of the reasons I paid 7k for that stuff.
Forgot to tell you something about the roof scoop. I know a Celica owner who put one on and it bent his roof when the wind hit. Imagine what it will do at 200 mph.

The two side scoops would be cool. I'd have to get somebody to chop that one for me to see how that would look. Sounds like it would look good though. I seen that on an NSX once.

Here is a generic chop of what it could look like...use your imagination...or what if you had the nsx vent, and molded a boxster style vent right below it, and into your rear fender flare...it would look like you have some sort of rear brake duct cooling deal going on...
