18's will look better but will make you a lot slower. 17's wont be as slow but wont look quite as good as 18's. I have 17's because I wanted the looks but I didnt want it to be too slow. And yes of coarse you will need new tires to go with the bigger rims.

Well if you are going for looks then 18's but if you are going for looks and somewhat performance go 17's. I had 17's but now i'm going to go with 18's because i've seen a lot of celica on here that have 18's and they look so much better. there are all kinds of sites on the internet like...

www.wheelmax.com [wheelmax.com]
www.tires.com [tires.com]
www.wheelsnext.com [wheelsnext.com]

just to name a few.

rims make it slower??? I had 14's when i bought my car and upgraded to 17's and lowprofile tires to make the overall diamerer the same, and it dosen't run any slower, rougher, yes, but not slower.

Think about it...theoretically a bigger rim is usually a little more weight...therefore can be slower wink

Also Sami, Ill buy your factory wheels and tires off of you and pick them yup in Portland This Coming thursday...are you interested?

Only if great condition and good threas left:)

well, shit, if your going by weight, than it would have had the opposite effect for me. My old rims were 3" smaller, but overall had more material to them, and than weighed more. So upgrading mine wouldn't do anything. Look at the pics:

Yea, i see what your saying about the weight, but if the old ones weighed about the same, if not more, than it wouldn't do anything, right?

The weight of the new rims is the biggest factor for how much slower it will be. Going from stock 15's to heavy 18's will add almost a second on your quarter mile time. The extra diameter of the wheel slows the car down slightly too. But of coarse 18's look a lot better.

it also matters where the weight is - a rubber tire is lighter then a metal rim, so even if the entire wheel is the same size, more metal = more unsprung weight = slower. Having a rim with minimal material arround the outside of the rim (like the thin spoked stock GTS rims) will help to, because there will be less spinning mass

If speed is a big concern for you...don't go with big rims...but 18's LOOK good. If you want the best of both worlds then spring for a lightweight 5-spoke forged wheel with lightweight low profile tires...and that will be the best you can do...(i know it's not popular to advertise tires for weight purposes...but if you look up specs of them you will find differences)

i always questioned the diameter of a wheel. the bigger the tire, the more distance is covered every time it goes one full rotation. a smaller tire, less distance is covered. Red is one tire, gray is a bigger diameter tire... wouldn't this be somewhat true?

most the time when you get bigger rims, you get smaller tires, so the red grey thing dosen't always help.

yea, you'd want to get the overall diameter the same for the tires so you don't have to recalabrate your spedo, than the tires will also be more lo profile. the rims can change all you want, but either way, the new tires should be the same overall.

Don't quite know what you're asking here, but with a different outer diameter size for the wheel/tire, you should probably recalibrate the speedometer. It may seem like you would go faster with a larger diameter, but in fact you will run at a lower RPM with a larger tire at a given speed, and would be lower down in the powerband, meaning you'd have less acceleration.
