I just invested over $1,500. in a new dvd system for my car and I am concerned about someone stealing it. What is the best (reasonably priced) alarm system? I am more concerned with someone breaking in than stealing my car.

I also do not need other features like 'remote start'.

Any suggestions? Please provide links if possible.

Thanks.

DEI Viper. Hands down best out there. Some will tell you clifford or Compustar, but Viper/Clifford/Compustar = same company(DEI). Just thought i'd clear that up right away. thumbsup

How much? What makes it better than anything else? I have no clue what to look for in an alarm besides that it should be loud. smile

They are quality alarms.
I used to install them for a living. I've installed just about every brand out there, and DEI makes the best product. They are more user friendly in terms of install as well. Even a novice could install it themselves.

viper is handsdown the best alarm, granted most high end alarms come with a remote start (optional at LEAST). I'd say the key is saving up and getting a microwave sensor option. If you're good with electrical projects it'll cost around $500, however if you have to get it installed then you never know. I'm saving up for a viper with microwave sensor, all after my new stereo system.

What does the "microwave sensor" do?

Also, for the Viper 791XV (or any remote for that matter) I have read a lot of articles that claim that the remote battery dies often? Anyone have any more information? How hard is it to replace?

Any difference between the Viper 771XV and the Viper 791XV? I don't know their prices, but I think the 771 has a cooler looking remote.

Thanks.

The difference is the 791 has remote start. the 771 does not. I have the 791xv and my battery needs changing every 2 months which is not bad at all.

You cant really go wrong. Most major companies are infact owned by DEI as said above (viper, clifford, compustar). Also, i dont see the need to go to the extreme of a two-way. All it does it inform you your shit has been jacked and those remotes tend to break easier.

for the viper 791xv, the remote itself has problems. My friend has that viper alarm, and he says that the remote has problems. So far, his "stock" one that came with the car broke. Now, the replacement one, (newer version) malfunctions. But he opened it up and jammed small pieces of paper near the battery and it works now. grin once again, go compustar.

does the insurance cost go down a lot when you get a car alarm?

I've had no probs with mine. The 791xv remote is also a pager. So when your car goes off so does the remote.

Honestly anyone that knows two shits about car theft could easily bypass any alarm. Even when in the headunit (DVD player) could be out in 30 seconds tops.

Yes, I also have the 791XV and have no problems with it. It's an awesome alarm to have, although can be pricey.

one thing to consider. If someone wants to get in your car, they'll get in it. Nothing will stop them. Alamrs can be bypassed.. or cracked into. If someone wants your stereo system, they just break your window, take the headunit or whatever in about 20 seconds and run. By the time you actually get paged and get out of the house, they'll be long gone. Paging just gives you a headstart to grab the bat and track down the amateaurs. grin pros, on the other hand... well they'll get in the car if they really want to.
