Celica Forums General Discussion Engine and Performance Dealership install of TRD exhuast...

I thought this was weird..I have a friend who im helping out to get a TRD exhaust from the toyota dealership. They say they will charge him $500 even for the exhaust itself, and $85 an hour for install. After that, they told him to expect to pay for around 2 Hours of install time! Now after being at this sight for a long time, i know that most exhausts dont take more then an hour to install, especially with experianced mechanics at the dealership. My Tanabe exhaust system was installed in less then 45 minutes from a body shop. Now my question to yall is, do you think that the dealership doesnt know what they are talking about for 2 hours of install time? And will it be under warranty if he and I installed the TRD exhaust on his corolla ourselves? Thanks for any suggestions...

dealership sucks i would install it myself if i were you

it's only 3 bolts and they have access to a lift...if it takes them more than 30min. run for the hills and never go back to that dealership

i hope you have some astroglide because that dealership is getting ready to assfuck you. Definately do it yourself or take it to someplace else.

You don't even need a lift, just a jack.

1. Jack the back of the car up and put it on jack stands.
2. Get the biggest wrench and breaker bar you can find and a can of WD40.
3. Spray the exhaust bolts with WD40 and let it sit for 10 mintues.
4. Break the bolts loose, unbolt the muffler from the b-pipe (don't loose the gasket).
5. Cover the ends of the exhaust hangers in dish soap, find a friend, and pull of the muffler until it comes out of the hangers (this is the hardest part).
6. Put the new muffler under the car and into the rubber hangers.
7. Bolt the new muffler to the b-pipe.

It's really not very difficult.

I would go to another dealership and get it installed becuz i feel safe with the warranty behind me. I got mine installed for like 60 or 70 bucks at a dealership. Just go to another dealership.

I could do it in less than 15 minutes with a hoist. 30 tops with a race Jack.

uh they installed my TRD exhaust in like...10 mins without the time they had to find a different bolt.

my bolts were rusted on, went to a local muffler shop, They charged me 40 bucks, and I gave the mechanic 10 bucks. It took them like 20-25 minutes max

Dealership uses the book rate instead the actual work time. I'd say ask them which one are they using. But since dealership are such a rip off they will most likely say work rate plus a whole bunch of "inspections and testing." My dealership when I first got my exhaust they wanted $90 regardless of how long it will take.

I got my TRD used and without any bolts and for that price I think it was too much...So I decided to install it myself. The parts guy was cool enough to hand me nuts and bolts and new gasket. Took me almost 2 hours but then again I only have jack, wrench, and a ape's strenght to complete it.

i had never done anything mechancial with my car and with use of a lift it took me about 20 minutes. the hardest part was breaking the torque on the bolts.

if i install it myself, will it still be under warranty? Its still trd exhaust...

you wil have a 1 year warranty. but you would WANT A DEALER TO DO IT for a 3 year 36k warranty. the trd exhaust IN SOME CASES have been known to blow out and in need for replacement or welding. i posted this sometime last year.

wow your friend must be rich if he took his car to the dealer to get a exhaust install i think the exhaust is the easyest thing to install, just jack up the car, take 2 bolts out and get the exhaust out of the hanger, then bolt the new one on. i should take less then 20 with the right tools, not even a impact gun is need it just use long pipes for lebrage, thats all you need, if you have rusted bolts just use some W40 and let it soak for about 20 then use the pipes for lebrage and your set to go, wow so sad wasting $200 on a dealer, but your friend is probably just like my cousin, he always tells me he wants things done pro. but if you ask me who does better work than your self, im sure the mechanic wont give a shit whos car it is and wont check 2 times if everything is right sigh, just my 02

Yea i agree. But then again, like ct said, you will have a 3 year warranty if they do it vs. one year.

Your exhaust won't go bad in a year unless it's a defect because who ever installs it is going to install it properly. It's that easy. A 3 year warranty isn't worth it on an exhaust because the warranty is just for install related problems. Toyota will never pay either ways or will give you a hard time.
I still have my stock exhaust since 2000 and it's great as many other people without replacing their exhausts for the obvious performance exhausts like you are asking.
The warranty is a scam.
Maybe some moving parts like suspension or whatever else Toyota doesn't offer for the Celica I might look into it if I was going that route.
Never get an exhaust installed by Toyota. Bad mistake.

Is the TRD exhaust stainless? Or no? If you have a lot of problems in your area with oxidation I would suggest getting any kind of warranty out of it that you can. I will not buy an exhaust or a header for that matter unless it is stainless...or titanium (exhaust not header dur). I have heard horror stories about many headers and exhausts just falling apart after the first year because of severe rust. However, another thing you need to think about is cost now vs. cost later. I mean, if the dealer is going to be a cock and charge you $100 + to just install your exhaust FUCK THAT! It is not worth it at all. The long term risidual use of that performance product is not fixed. Meaning, you could end up selling your car in a year and you just saved $100 bucks.

Another Idea is just go over to checker, Napa, Auto Zone, or Sears and pick up a light weight aluminum race jack. They are around $130. It is honestly worth its weight in gold!! You will use it countless times and you will be the envy of every tool geek in town!
