Celica Forums General Discussion Exterior Weighted shift knobs

I just installed a B&M short shifter, and I'm liking it a lot. Now I'm looking for different knob to complete the package. Since the short shifter requires more force to move from gear to gear, will a heavy weighted shift knob make shifting easier (more weight, more leverage?), or will it only add to the amount of force needed to push the stick? I thought I knew the answer, but I've seen somewhere the a heavier knob will only make shifting less precise and more difficult.

Anybody have any experience with a heavy knob? How does it affect shifting?

sup man i have the same car. I installed a TWM short shifter and the shift knob is pretty heavy. Personally i think a heavier shift knob helps for me becuz the gears are pretty stiff and its easier to shift. A lighter one might make you use more strength to push it and you might have some problems shifting.

a weighted knob should help because youn will be applying the force to the knob, whereas with a light knob you apply the force to the opposite end of the shifter. it's kinda complicated.

force = mass x acceleration
so a heavyer knob wil require more force to start it moving but once its moving it will also take more force to stop it


so theroticaly one will make the shift slower while on the other hand it will also make it faster lol which doesn't make sense but not much physics do


the weight and distances here are pretty much miniscul find a knob you like and buy it weight will ahve no effect

Won't make a damn difference. The weight is mostly down; shifting is mostly lateral.

yea, plus, the weights of the different knobs are so small that you wouldnt even notice a difference...

actually it will make a difference. I HAVE a weighted shift knob and immediately as soon as i put it on, it was so much different than stock. It feels different.. you can actually feel the weight. I hve the greddy counterweight one at almost 14 oz.. and it's great. If you're going from neutral to gear (i.e. 1st) then then probably more force needed (not much more).. but from straight shifts... like 3-4 or 5-6.. the shifts are easy. you barely need to tap it in.

I would just leave it, I have the TWM SS and while it is more stiff and take a little more effort to shift, I kinda like it! You get use to it after a while anyways. I install a set of steel shifter bushings as well and now every gear just clicks in place! No free play at all!!!

I found I ground the gears when I had a light shift knob. The heavy shift knob makes it feel better---and I don't grind the gears through mis-shifting. The weight gives it a certain feeling--it is hard to describe---sort of like confidence...or quality. I know I am not making sense, but the heavier shift knob was always better for me, I discovered long ago. The weight gives me more accuracy and better control.

Weighted knobs help the shifter feel smoother.
Lightweight knobs will let you feel the gates better.

WERD. i know about that "confidence" thing. it's like.. GOES in without hesitatation or something ahah works like a charm

go with the lightweight one it will take .5 off your 1/4 mile time saving in weight
