Until you get into an accident, they determine that the cause of the crash was the improperly installed aftermarktet turbocharger, and then deny your claim.
So they will never know until you really need them and they want to inspect your car.
All theoretical of course.

no you damn fools...
his dad doest want him to spend 5k and then get into a front end collision, that is his fault... then the insurance not pay for the repair of the turbo on top of the regular repairs...

^^ not techinically ... they could still deny his claim they could...i think it depends on their policy if you read it specifically to check it out...also what type of accident and if ur insurance rep is a dick or not. One thing is certain though...they will never pay for a turbocharger that you never insured. With my company though...when i crashed my car they told me to remove any aftermarket parts that i put on...and they didn't ask me about it...they just trusted the body shop's appraisal... 50:50 chance really...

when my stereo(after market) got stolen they said they'd cover it if I could produce a receipt proving I had the thing. I tossed it though.. and the deductable on theft was like 500 so I could buy 2 stereos for that so not worth it anyways. but would worth it for a 5k turbo kit. Best bet though would be to read the paperwork on the insurance policy. of course if the car gets "totaled"(meaning repairs are worth more than value of car then they will just give you value of the car and your outta luck if it was worth more than that)

if you don't tell them insurance won't cover it but you can awlays say you dind't know you had to tell them
on most insurnce forms its asks " any power producing items" i know with progressice on my bike they asked about big bore kits turbos and nawz

most insurance companies have setups where you can insure customizations...not sure how a turbo would affect your insurance persoanlly, but I know that if you don't tell them, then they won't charge you, but at the same time won't insure it either

I think the BEST answer is call your insurance company and ask them the details: 1) How much will my premium increase if I put a turbo on my car? 2) Will it be covered if it is insured? (A rhetorical question I hope.) 3) Will it be covered if I add it on and don't insure it? (less rhetorical) 4) Will all claims be denied if I add an uninsured turbo?
The insurance company won't panic if it doesn't exist on the car - he's just doing his homework like he should. You all should know that, and that should be your first recommendation. It doesn't matter what his dad says, and it doesn't matter what we think will happen - the insurance company makes all the decisions: talk to THEM.
