i recently picked up a 4th generation, 20gb ipod. has anyone tried to mount an ipod in the late model celica? because of the curves of the interior, i'm not sure how to proceed. all suggestions would be very welcome. thanks in advance

what does a radio have to do with anything? if you're suggesting FM transmitters, it's not really an option for me. i live in the middle of metro la, and finding an open frequency that doesn't get massive interference every 3-4 minutes is impossible. tried that, didn't work. looking to hardwire, but i'm not sure where would be the best place physically..
also, does anyone know if the factory head unit has an aux in the back... probably not, i'd gues...

you need an aftermarket unit to accomplish full capabilites of mounting an ipod and it's very worth it, if i ever get another mp3 player, i want to use it in the car cause a one cd changer sucks! and you get so much more music!!

I have an I pod and bought a rubber case for it. I usually lay it down by the window controls but its hard to use it from down there. I want to find something that will hold it by the middle compartment ontop of the radio, but no luck so far.

if you have an single din head unit and the casing for it has a compartment, you could just lay it in that. i don't think it's something to get real fancy over, but that would be cool

I'm currently working on this delema. So far the best I've come up with it mounting it in the center console door behind the cup holders on the INSIDE. Then using the remote wire to control it from the button thing thats on the remote. Still in the works. Nothing's finished yet. But that's my current idea.

I took out the ashtray insert and put my ipod in there, unfortunately the door doesnt close all the way with it in there. But in the future i am goin to get one of these: http://www.mp3yourcar.com/ and a docking station and i'm planing on moding the docking station to mount on the back of the ashtray door, so you can flip it down and drop in your ipod and go!
PS: This is what part of the alphabet would look like if Q and R were eliminated.

I think those look cheesy. but that's just me. I like the ipod being hidden and controling it with a remote

wow... some great ideas here.
1) i've tried the ashtray thing too, and that's an okay place to rest it. i haven't checked it out, but what if a hole was drilled there to run a line out from the ipod dock to the back of an aftermarket head unit? upside: no cables to see, you get to use the little dock, plus power if you can rig up another 12v connection behind the dash. downside: when you change songs, you lose the sound (by removing it from dock), and the ashtray doesn't completely close shut
2) good point about an aftermarket HU w/ the larger casing! there would be a slot below it, usually where people would put cds or whatev... ipod would fit nicely there.
for now... at least the celica gods were kind enough to give those of us w/ the factory deck a tape player for a cassette adapter! lol
i'm glad to hear others are pumped about this idea... let's keep it going and see if we all can't come up with an effective, yet classy looking solution

There is a company called Arkon, and they make PDA mounts. There are a bunch to choose from. I have the one that is a flexible stalk, and it mounts to the passenger seat bolts. Although made for a PDA, I have found it works for my sat radio, my GPS, etc., so I would imagine it would also work for an IPOD. The picture shows my PDA mounted in it, which at the time was also serving as a GPS... It might work for you. The beauty of it is, if you don't like it, easy to undo, just unscrew it.

IPOD is nice to have! We have one mounted in my dads car and in my moms car! There really nice, and its way better then having to swap CD"s all the time.

the PDA mount is an excellent idea if you don't want to go through mounting work and have it easy in and out.

still dead, bluerice *shrug*
here's what i'm thinking...
i want to buy a head unit that has a front audio aux in. since the factory deck is ginormous, i'll have to get a housing for the aftermarket one... probably one that has one of those little storage slots below the space for the deck. that would be a fine place to just slide the little ipod in, w/ the little mini-to-mini cord tucked away behind, going to the front aux.
now, using a cassette adapter, i get a whispery/hiss/whine when i turn my stereo up too high. i have to try and compensate by turning the ipod all the way up and keeping the stereo volume around half. not great, but okay. will this happen if i use the line-in on an aftermarket stereo?

Yes, there is an Alpine deck available that can be linked to an iPod. My friend bought this unit for his Corolla S, and hooked up the iPod, running the wiring through the back and sticking the iPod in his glove box so that it's completely hidden. Works great and looks clean.

I think the picture of mine is working again, at least it seems to be for me right now...if not for you guys, I'll repost it. In the meantime, here is the link to Arkon...this is the PDA mount...I notice that like someone else said, they now have dedicated IPOD mounts, although I didn't see any with the flexible stalk. And yeah, to answer someone's question, it is totally bendable/adjustable http://www.arkon.com/pdamount.htmlScroll down to the one called flexible gooseneck mount
