I have a 2000 GTS and I just discovered that Walmart has been putting on the wrong oil filter ever since I got the car. They were using the one for the 1ZZ-FE engine.

There are no oil leaks, and the car performs great (since I read how to clean the MAF on this forum).

Has the life of my engine been shortened by using the wrong filter?
Does Walmart have any liability if I have a problem in the future?

And,Yes, I know it was stupid to have Walmart change my oil in the first place.

I just changed my oil yesterday and rechecked the part number on the trd filter from the dealer. I dont trust anyone. As long as it didnt leak out it should be ok. It probably didnt filter as well. Id just check from now on.

I'm sorry...i hope everything is ok...that really makes me feel good about doing my oil and filter myself...

some friends of mine take their cars to walmart for $10 oil and filter change...the oil filter i use itself costs more than that...so it made me pretty skeptical...

I guess I expected some friendly advice and answers to my questions - not everyone piling on and telling me what an idiot I am.

I ask again: Has the life of my engine been shortened by using the wrong filter?

You know whats even more funny?

That you didn't know both cars use exactly the same oil filter, the only thing different about them is the model number. Same capacity, same thread size. grin

I hope to god they didn't put WALMART brand oil in your car! Hope it was pennzoil, castrol or other.

If you changed your oil frequently enough, then I don't think the filtering issue would have changed anything. It still would have worked and done its job, its just a stupid filter anyways, that's all it does.

The only thing is that your overall oil pressure might have changed if in fact the GT & GTS do take different filters. So you may have had problems engaging LIFT properly.

They most likely used a FRAM Filter, for the 1ZZ-FE FRAM calls for PH4967 filter, and for the 2ZZ-GE is PH4386. So its two different filters, but I haven't picked up both to see what's the difference yet, as I'm still getting all my oil changes done by Toyota.

But in terms of engine damage, wear n tear. I don't think they'll be any at all, unless they used the WALMART Oil. frown

No, they didn't use Walmart oil. I specified Valvoline.

The two filters are different. The correct one is about an inch taller, which I assume means that it contains more Fram cardboard. cool

Thanks for the reassurance GTS_Rosh.

I think the Celi is one of the easiest for an oil change. The Honda CR-V on the other hand...WOW!

Why did everyone jump down his throat? seriosly he is new, we dont wanna lose people withen 5 minutes.

It shouldnt hurt your car at all. If it does you can get walmart in trouble. but since you touched it you never know it could void there warrenty.

yeah, i'm pretty sure your engine fine. since they're the same capacity the performance differences aren't great.

No, they are not.

Maybe the fram ones are different, but the OEM Toyota and TRD/K&N filters are EXACTLY the same, except for the model number. Same thread size, same depth, same element, same grommet, same FPM, same everything.

Fram oil filters are crap, if you are bitching about quality, do yourself a favor and buy a TRD/K&N filter. They have feedback springs to prevent dry starts in cold weather, and the higest FPM rates on the market. thumbsup

Huh, I didn't know that! Yeah, I'm pretty sure the Fram ones are different from each other, and maybe a few others, but maybe you're right about the Toyota ones. Toyota filter is made by Purolator, right?
