Celica Forums General Discussion Engine and Performance Stuck throttle cable maybe?

Lately in the cold I've had like 3 scary instances where I'll be driving and the car will just start gunning it full speed on its own, I have to slam the brakes also to the point of ABS to slow it down, if I take if out of gear it would blow up because it would easily bounce it off the rev limiter. Normally I wouldnt mind this but today it did it to me in the middle of traffic and I also plowed a guy at 45, I couldnt do anything to stop it but ride the brakes, I didn't try and unstick the pedal (if thats what it was) because it would rev it even higher. I turned the car off and it continued to do it,even after pumping the gas pedal with the engine off, as soon as I turned engine on again it revved. Could this be a stuck cable or a IAC problem? Any suggestions from Lucky or someone?

Have you checked the throttle cable? Where it connects to the throttle body.

Yeah dude definately check the throttle body. That happend to me and it turned out the throttle was held open at the throttle body. I spent hours checking the cable but it only took me 15 sec to see the actual problem once I pulled off the intake tube.

why didnt you turn the ignition off ?

I meant *almost. And I did turn it off...it kept going

hmmm would have to be something holding the throttle plate open. I'd say pull the throttle body off and see whats wrong.

how easy is it to do that..i tried and failed. I saw what I thought was the idle air sensor under the throttle body,but it had weird 5-sided screws holding it on. Lucky help me out man!

wtf. the IACV should have 3 phillips style screws holding it onto the TB.

also you'll want to look at the throttle plate not the IACV.

oh yeah, the link in my sig has pics of how to remove the throttle body. there should also be one in the installs forum that I made.
