i read/watched a lot of reviews on these two cars. my research tells me that they're both about the same performance, so now i'd like to hear from the ecelica people. which would you prefer, and why?

No way an STI is better then the EVO!, for one the EVO won the sports Compact Car of the Year! second even with the 30 hp that the STI has, the EVO will eventually kick its ass, third a MITS company in england is making 150 special edition EVO'S! with twin guarret turbos at an estimated 450HP! with a 0-60 in 3.4 seconds, the only downside, not legal in U.S and they will cost $80,000 dollars, oh well at least i got my celi to keep me comfterball!

EVO!!! Everything i have read about it says its a better performer.. and the interior is much much better, seats, fit and finish, and no blue indoor outdoor carpet.

STI for sure. EVO has huge problems and mega turbo lag. Mitsubishi in Japan is sorta like FORD here. Its got a real bad rep. Too many models burning up and safety items failing all the time, and major lawsuits everywhere. If you ever watch track races featuring the EVO (ie. Best Motoring) they always overheat and crap out. thumbsdown

if you test drive an Evo and an STI you will find the STI to be much more of a practical car and i think it was faster...

Well, between those two, I'd take the STI. But then everyone says the transmission on both is pretty poor, so if that's true, then I'd take neither. But if I HAVE to take one, STI, hands down.

I'd take the Evo, because I'm partial to the 4G63 motor. And the US-spec STi isn't the true STi, it uses the 2.5L Legacy Turbo motor instead of the real 2.0L Impreza turbo motor that they use oversees, but ofcourse the 2.5 is still a kick ass motor. And the weak transmission isn't really true because stupid people think that they can abuse a car and not break anything. If you want to drive hard you got to expect something is going to break, and since the Evo and STi are both AWD there is a huge amount of stress on their drive train when you're racing, especially if you do high rpm drag launches.

STI, subaru is more reliable and have better handling, Evo is faster but mitsu are shit so unless your leasing it or plan on running it down a straight line and have $ to fix it i'd get an STI

STi for now. There have been many problems with the evo's warranty, and I don't think I want to gamble with that.

As far as performance is concerned, I'd say the two are near deadlock if experienced drivers are behind the wheel of each. As far as looks go, I'd have to go with the Evo. I've examined both very closely, and I am just more drawn to the Evo. However, there has been a white STi with Gold rims around campus lately and it's pretty hot too. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess.

I'm just glad I waited on getting the Evo. The Evo 9 is suppose to be pretty sweet!

Evo.
Don't believe the hearsay or top gear videos. The turbo lag is a myth for us and the Evo suits "our" needs better than a STI.
I could drive my Celica down a stretch of road at 35-40 MPH in 6th gear and get beaten by a 90 crx without down shifting. What's the point there.
I'm sure you drive a Celica. The Evo should be the next choice in your head based on some of the best handling on the planet and braking and acceleration that equals the STI.
The Evo's engine has been around for a decade and you can boost it up to 600 + if you have the money easily or do what you want. The parts, the turbo, are here now. So are the brakes and suspension parts. The Evo is going to get even better in the following year or so also, if you can believe that.
My opinion is test drive both cars and decide even if you don't plan on getting those cars or any new car.
Don't only read the magazines or follow what's written here. That's the same.
A test drive only takes 30 minutes and you wish you had either one of those cars over your Celica. Maybe it's better that you don't.

EVO MR has the worst turbo lag on the planet.. if your going 40mph or so and ur in 6th and ur punch it a frickent escort would be able to pass you if it was doing the same thing.. STi doesn't lag like that

^^hahaha niice info. i AM thinkin about it in the near future..around the time when i finish school..n i agree about the test driving thing..just tryin to get as much info as possible..crazy thing is that they're both made and function differently, but such similar performance. i just thought that's kinda trippy.

its kinda of like asking rsx-s and gts, they're a lot alike.. i would go with the evo because i personally think it looks better and it also handles better then a sti but about the same performance, the sti might have a little bit more power but not too big of a difference

Definitely the STi; I WILL get one sometime in the future. grin

I got my hands on the show called Top Gear and they did a review on the cars. The Evo outperformed the STi just by a tad, but had flimsy interior; the STi has a better build quality. Also, at the end, the two hosts mentioned at the end of the day, after testing, they got in the STi to drive back to the studio instead of the Evo.

It's a matter of personal preference since they're so closely alike.

I'm pretty sure the turbo lag on the Evo isn't that bad since it has a pretty good turbo and it's not very big either. The STi is known to have a torquer more responsive motor. To say that the Evo would lose to an Escort, thats crazy if both were going the 30-40mph and in 6th gear(which would 5th for a escort since it doesn't have a 6sp gear box) and they both floor it, the Evo is not going to lose. The Escort's power would be more responsive initially but once the rpm reaches like 3500 the Evo's turbo is going to be spooling pretty quick then the Evo would be going like 80mph and the Escort is going 50mhp. All turbo cars suffer from turbo lag, but if you have driven in one, for regular driviving purposes most people won't even notice it.

Also if you want to talk about lag, look at the Celica, we have to wait to 6k rpm for lift just to get some real power going, and I know a lot of you lift addicts still like the Celica.

STi since they have that nifty little power transfer swtich for the power ratio to the front and rear wheels.

To nearly get rid of lag all you need is a properly sized turbo for your setup, or so I've heard.
