Hi, new to the forum. Don't own a celica yet, but looking to buy one in the next few months. I remember reading a long time ago that one year of the 7th gen's had a lower redline or rev limiter. Just wondering which year this was, and if there's anything else I should look out for between the years.
Sorry to repost this but I can't find the old thread.
Thanks for the help

I recommend the 2001 GTS.
The 2000 GTS I believe has some recall issues but I don't know if they are serious.
The 2002 GTS has the lower rev limiter set at 7800 rpm vs the other years at 8350 rpm. This can be resolved by the PowerFC, the one-and-only standalone ecu for the Celica, and an excellent one at that. The 2002 does have wider shift gates than earlier years which could be good if you are worried about pulling a 3rd to 2nd misshift.
If you are serious about performance don't get a GTS which is '03 and up, because they have Drive-by-wire (DBW) and that is not compatible with the PowerFC.
I get my kicks on EC.

00 is the best, cant mess with the orginal. sorta...high rev limit...different clock if that matters... BUT We have tranny problems with the synchros AND brake master cylinder recall... If i would have to say...I would go with '01...all of our strengths and fewer of our weaknesses. plus i don't really like the 03-up bumper... BUT 03 and up have full leather interior not fake vinyl in the back...and arguably better taillights... *shrug* Whatev they're all sexy

2000-2001 best for turbo and performance mods. 2002 the safest of them all if you wanna buy used, because previous owner couldnt launch it more than 7800rpm. 2003- best interior, less or no rattles, better dash paint and quality, better leather seats. improved overall.

2002 the safest of them all if you wanna buy used, because previous owner couldnt launch it more than 7800rpm. great point. thinking about it, it's no assurance of course. maybe on the other years they didn't go much into upper rpms. and then there are those that say the stock valves are fine up to 8500+ rpm. attempting to land lift with 7800 rpm limit could also mean they spent more time bouncing off the rev limiter/fuel cut running lean which is not good. it's all about how it was driven. I would have a compression test done, before deciding to buy, whichever year that is.
