I'm sure by now everyone knows what's been going on here in SoCal. About 8" of rain over the past week alone. Unfortunately, I've had to do some serious driving over that time.

I have to say, the Celi just seems to be squirly on any sort of wet road. I'm not talking standing water either... just anything beyond mild dampness. Twice I've almost hydroplaned out of my lane on the freeway in the past I don't think I need it alligned, and I still have 50% tread on my tires...

I'm sort of thinking that the width of the stock tires coupled with the low weight of the car might be responsible? I remember my Miata feeling more stable than this, and it was RWD...

The problems you're describing isn't a problem with the celica - it's your shitty tires. Get some new ones.

i was having problems driving in the rain earlier this year... and unfortunately had to switch my tires about a week ago. I've been out quite a few times over the past week with my new tires and haven't had a single issue since!

I've had similar problems here in AZ and up where I live, we get lots of flooding where the washes are and I hydroplane all the damn time and have brand new tires, was just aligned. They aren't all weather tires though, and didn't get the best tires because I'm getting new rims/tires soon.

The stock tires, Yokohamas, that came with my car, seem to do OK in the rain. I'm in AZ too, and we're getting a lot of rain here like CA.

it IS a tire issue. a few months ago (lol when my car was drivable) i needed some new tires but i didnt have a lot of $$. so i just replaced the fronts cause they were the worst..my rears prob had like 15% tread left on them.

BAD idea. i got caught in rain, hit a little puddle on an overhead expressway..my front tires gripped well but my backs went hydroplaning all over the road..after about 5 seconds of trying to control the car it finally just went crazy and i spun around over 3 lanes and smacked the barrier with the driver's side of my rear bumper didn't have a lot of damage (just a LOT of scratches..one deep enough that it scratched all the way through the urethane to make a small hole) but it did scare the living HELL out of me. and fortunately i didn't hit anyone..i think everyone saw me struggling with it and kinda laid back so when i lost control everyone was a little behind me. it was crazy..i didnt want to drive for weeks after that.

as you can think..i immediately replaced my rear tires and i hadn't had an issue with them even in the rain.

I have some performance tires that have maybe 3-4k miles on them. It handles alright in the rain, but it sucks horribly in the snow/ice.

^^ for snow you need a tire with wide 'gaps' in the outer tread pattern to remove the snow/ice faster.

Well your Miata has perfect weight distribution at 50/50, the Celica is 64/36, so its a bit front heavy. So the front tires make a lot of difference, plus it being FWD. You should get something that's specifically for RAIN, like the Michelin HydroEdge. That should address all those issues.

its not bad... i can feel it lose traction a lot but if you keep your wheels strait and just let off the gas you'll be fine...

my expedition on the other hand... its AWSOME... i charge the huge puddles at like 50 mph jujst to watch the water sprayt up

Like everyone else said, it's the tire.
The best tire for rain should have V-pattern tread.
The wider tire causes hydroplane easier than narrower tire because
water cannot get out fast enough and creates the layer between
your tire and road surface.
If you are out of snow belt, try the Yokohama AVS ES 100.
They are not expensive and super stable in the rain and grip
very well on dry road. I have never had problem with mine.

If you want a cheaper one try Falken Ziex 512.

the best tire is with no tread at all...if you find some of those...you are the man...

in my '95 celica i always had problems in the rain tried lots of diff tires nothing helped cept maybe a lil here and there. my 04 celi does nice in the rain havn't had a prob yet.

It is actually not true that a summer tire is worse in the rain then an all season tire. Some of the best wet treaction tires are in fact a max performance summer tire... for example the Yokohama AVS Sport, Kumho Ecxta MX, Bridgestone Potenza S-02 Pole Position. An all season tire is designed to work 'well' in most conditions, with dry, wet, and snow in mind. It there for can not do anyone of them better then a tire specifically designed for that condition. Any tire will hydroplane at a certin speed, so you have two choices drive slower or invest in some really good tires. That said I have the Yokohama AVS Sport 225/35/18 on my car, I have never hydroplaned with them and they are getting quite low.

I just got the Falken GR-Beta 225/45/ZR16s on my GTS, which are very much a performance tire, but are awesome in the rain.

because my celica is really good in the rain and on wet/damp roads
you always drive with caution obviously in wet weather, but i'm saying the celica held it much better than my suby did...but that had the shittiest tires on it ever

Thank god I live in Cali... it stopped raining today, which probably means I won't need to worry about wet roads again for eight months.

But yeah, it must be the tires. Maybe I'll get racing slicks like the guy up above suggested.

I drive with my AVS es100 tires in the rain and sometimes I catch my self going pretty fast and the car handles great during the rain.

The celi does fine in the rain its either a tire or a driver issue.

Seriously. I live in Pa, and we get all the weather. The celi does pretty well in all this crap...yes...EVEN SNOW. As long as you have the proper tires and are driving considering conditions, the celi does very well.

Performance tyres isn't a problem. I've got 235/35/19 Falken FK451 tyres, and they perform excellent in rain. I've had some yokohama's and pirelli p-zero's in the past, and they never gave me the confidence I get driving in the rain with the falken tyres. After I started buying falken tyres, I've never even thought about getting a different brand. They're great.

Debating and discovering which is the more ideal approach when installing a major performance upgrade relates very little to a tire joke you didn't understand. I refuse to make it a standard to add a smiley to a post just so little kids such as yourself can get a chuckle too...

As far as judging me, enjoy it...because it won't affect me as much as you were hoping for. I know where I stand, and I neither know, nor claim to know all about potential import modifications. Owning a truck 95% of my life and recently buying a celica this past July, I don't even see why I should be a perfectionist when obviously some people have been obsessed with it their whole life. I had the same problem with my old tires. They were technically all-season but they really sucked in dry weather, let alone in wet weather. I never got the chance to but I should've put the shifter to first, pull the ebrake, and slam the gas...

I got new tires recently, all season tires as well, but these ones are much better. They are Yokohama Avid H4S (for the GTS you may be able to buy the V4S with a higher speed rating, stiffer sidewall, etc...if it's important to you;)). I have a hard time breaking them loose in the rain now (like an auto GT should be) and I'm having trouble finding a safe place to push the limit in the dry.

We've had lots of rain recently too; very little hydroplaning, if any, and like I said great traction. I highly recommend them.

Hmm, I live in Socal and it's been raining almost non-stop for the past few days. I have the Yokohama AVS ES100's 16" and driving in the rain, I felt the tires loosing traction every so often. I would let go of the gas and hold the handle straight untill it regained traction a few seconds later. My tire pressure is at 32psi right now. Is something wrong here? I got the tires like 3,000 miles ago, brand new. They still have a lot of tread left.
